Fender Design

Fender:

A fender is the part of a car that protects and frames its wheels and keeps mud from splashing it. Most modern vehicles have fenders on their front wheels. When you get into a minor car accident, you can call it a "fender bender," and it's possible that your fenders did get slightly dented.

Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

TYPES OF FENDER

  • Full Bumper type
  • Half Bumper type

MOUNTING

  1. Bumper
  2. Drip
  3. A Pillar
  4. Sill
  5. Cowl

SMOOTH CURVES ARE PUT ON THE MOUNTS FOR EASY MANUFACTURING ,WHICH WILL REDUCE THE COST

CREATE THE DIP AREA:

  • Firstly a an offset of 5mm is mafde throughout the design.
  • secondly different layers are cut fromthe sample for the mounts.using curve on suurface and trim sheets.
  • two datum planes are place on the surface of the sample to get the accurate portion for drip mount.
  • a law extension of 8mm at an angle of 40 degrees is made.
  • followed by 17mm atan angle of 85 degrees
  • then 25mm at 0 degrees.
  • 2.5mm at 0 degrees,then 2mm at 75 degrees.
  • two darts of 45 degrees at 2.5mm radius is made.
  • 3 embosses are made of equal dimensions with 6mm radius bolt holes in it
  • these embosses are all edge fillet at 2mm radius.

WHAT IS DRIP AREA

It is the area through which fender is attached to engine housing through fasteners. There should be some consideration followed to design the drip area of fender. From back side of front fender, there will be 200mm clearance for cowl(wiper motor) mounting area.

PILLAR MOUNT:

This connects the fender with the A Pillar. A Pillar is the structure that combines body with the roof. This is the reason for windshield is in place.

  • USING LAW EXTENSION A LENGTH OF 20MM IS PROJECTED AT AN ANGLE OF 0 DEGREES.
  • A DATUM PLANE USING 3 POINTS IS CREATED ON THE PROJECTED SURFACE.
  • A SKETCH IS MADE WHICH IS THEN EMBOSSED AT 6MM USING DATUM SURFACE AS PLANE AND THEN A HOLE IS CREATED AT 7.5 MM THEN TRIMMED USING TRIM SHEET.

BUMPER MOUNT:

The bumper is installed on the front and rear sides of the car. Its main function is to the half fender minimize steel weight and improve the mileage of the cars

  • A PROJECTION OF 20 MM AT 0 DEGREES IS MADE
  • AN EMBOSS IS CREATED AT 6 MM USING DATUM PLANE WITH 2 HOLES TRIMMED WITH TRIM SHEET

SILL MOUNT:

  • A PROJECTION OF 20 MM IS MADE AT AN ANGLE OF 90 DEGREES WITH HORIZONTAL.
  • A SKETCH IS MADE USING THE DATUM PLANE ( 3 points) WHICH IS THEN EMBOSSSED
  • ON THE EMBOSSED SURFACE TEO HOLES ARE PUT USING THE TRIM SHEET .

COWL:

  • ON THE COWL MOUNT PROJECTION OF 20 MM IS MADE AND HOLE OF 7.5MM RADII IS TRIMMED INTO IT
