Fender Design
Fender Design and Different Mounts
Fender is a part of an automobile that frames a wheel well. The primary purpose of fender is to protect the pedestrian and engine from the sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray being thrown into air and engine compartment by the high speed rotating wheels.
There are two types of fenders being used in automobile industries:
- Full Bumper Type : These type of bumpers were used in the old model cars. These bumpers start from the headlight area till the gate. These fenders cover the full area, and these have lot of extra material which increases the weight of the car as well as the cost also.

- Half Bumper Type: These types of bumpers are currently being used in the new model cars. A lot of material is saved with these bumpers and it reduces the cost and the weight of the car.

Fender Design and Mountings

While designing fender the there are many points that we should consider so that the designed fender can be utilized further.
The designing of parts of fender should be done referring to the master section provided.
While providing the area for fasteners we should provide a flat surface so that it can easily get fitted. And to provide flat surface we should create embosses.
While designing the drip area, we have to consider the master section so that, we remember to leave the space of 150mm from one end of fender and 200mm from the other ends. These values are standards but they can also vary accordingly to the size and design of the cars.
Mounting points in a fender:

- Body
- A pillar
- Sill
- Bumper
- Drip
- Bumper Mounting Region: This is the region where the plastic bumper of the car is attached to the fender. The headlight region is also provided on the region. The bumper is provided so that it can absorb the impact in a minor collision and reduce the repair cost.
A flat surface is provided with holes so that fasteners can be used to mount the bumper on fender.

- A Pillar: The A pillar is theframe of the front windshield that is between the windshield and the front doors. All cars with a windshield come with an A pillar. The fender is mount to the A Pillar with the fasteners. Flat surface is created at the upper end of the fender and holes are provided for the fasteners.

- Sill: Therocker panel, or sill, is the part of the car traditionally running between the wheel-arches beneath the doors. The sill mounting region is provided at the bottom end of the fender. Flat surface with holes is provided in the sill mounting region so that we can connect it to the body. And this sill will provide support to the fender.

- Baffle: Baffle is the rubber part in an automobile which is provided to prevent the flow of dust, water, mud, and small stones in the air because of the rotating motion of tyres. To mount the baffle on the fender holes are provided at the lower region of the fender and the baffle is mounted with plastic screws.

- Drip: Drip area is the most important region of any fender. The fender is connected to the engine compartment. The design of drip area should be proper because there is a gap between the fender and the hood of the car from where one can see inside the car, so the flanges provided in drip area prevent us to see inside the engine compartment which is not a good area to see. If the design considerations are not good enough than the car will not look good. The flanges provided on the drip area also plays an important role in NVH. Because while doing motion there is vibrations and sound and movement so the design should be proper so that the NVH increases of the car.
