Fender Design
Objective:-To design the Front fender using CATIA V5.
Introduction:
Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well(the fender underside). Its primary purpose is tomprevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids and other roads spray from being thrown into the air by rotating tire.
Types of Fender:-
Full Bumper Fender these type of fender are used before half bumper type came into existance the main draw back with this is it uses more blank sheet to manufacture and scrap will be more so it is non economical to manufacture.
Half Bumper Fender are used mostly because it reduces the weight and scrap of the fender as well as car body. It creates only half of what the full bumper fender does and other parts are created with the bumper parts.
Design Consideration:
while designing the fender mostly the mounting areas will betaken into consideration
- Drip area
- A-Pillar mount
- Bumper mount
- Still mount
- Baffel and splash mount
we also make sure thar all the bolts are invisible and are interally only so that it doesn't affect the styling and looks of the car.
Embosses are provided in order to add strength and provide convenience during the bolting process.
DRIP AREA:
A drip area is mounted below the hood to connect it with the fender. It is designed like when the hood is in closed condition this region needs to be flush out and there will be fewer gaps so the inner area of the engine compartment will not show through the gap.
The drip area is bolted down by self tapping screws and sometimes it also spot welded the given master section shows the criteria as a design parameter for designing the drip mount.
the drip area is the part of a fender which is bolted on to the engine compartment. while designing the drip area the guidelines in the below image are followed.
it should be designing in such a way that a gap of 150mm from headligh end and 200mm from A pillar end should be there.

beads are provided in ordeer to preserve the structural integrrity during bolting and also to add strength to the drip mount
BUMPER MOUNTING this is the region where the fender will be mounted on to the bumper with the help of bolts. the inputs for this are taken from the design team working on the bumper

A PILLAR MOUNTING this is for attaching the fender to the a pillar area

STILL MOUNTING still mount is for attaching the fender to the area which is basically the bottom portion of the car near the front door

Baffel mounting :
It is an important mounting for a safety requirement to the pedestrian as well as engine compartment from the chipping

THE BODY

CONCLUSION
Fender design is created with the Drip,A- pillar,Still,Bumper and baffle mountings to asseble to the main BIW body of the Car.
