Fender Design
Aim:
To design the front fender using CATIA V5.
Objective:
Design the fender with the necessary mounting areas given below:
1.Drip area
2.A-Pillar mount
3.Sill mount
4.Bumper mount
5.Baffle and splash mount
Introducion:
Fender is the american english term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle, or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other roads spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.

Types of Fender:

Half bumper fenders are used mostly because it reduces the weight and scrap of the fender as well as car body. It creates only half of what the full bumper fender does and other parts are created with the bumper parts.
Procedure:
Drip mounting:
A drip area is mounted below the hood to connect it with the fender. It is designed like when the hood is in closed condition this region needs to be flush out and there will be fewer gaps, so the inner area of the engine compartments will not show through the gap.
The drip area is bolted down by self-tapping screws and sometimes it also spots welded. The given master secion shows the criteria as a design parameter for designing the drip mount.

As shown in the master section,
The drip area is made 150mm away from the front end of the fender which is kept for a headlamp in the bumper & 200mm away from the rear end is kept for wiper motor assembly.

Steps followed:
- First created the parallel curve of 5mm by selecting the edge line of the flange
- Next made two points on that curve by following the dimensions of the master section and splitting it with the curve.
- After that created a spline using the connect curve command by making two points on the lower edge of the flange.
- Then split it with the flange to get a drip flange.

- Sweeping the surface by giving 3 and 5-degree dafts as shown in the master secion.

- Embosses are provided to the flanges to increase the strength. Holes are created to join the fender and BIW frame.
- Ribs are also provided to the flange to reduce the spring back effect and NVH.

A-Pillar mounting:
A-pillar mounting is created to joint the fender and A-pillar.

Sill Mounting:
Sill is basically the bottom side of the BIW and it is joint to the fender.

Bumper mounting:
The bumper is attached to the front fender. It absorbs the impact force during the crash and it always should be separate from the fender so it can be easily replaceable.

Baffle mounting:
It is an important mounting for a safety requirement to the pedestrian as well as engine compartment from the chipping.

Results:
Fender design is created including the required mounting following the master section.
The Body:

Conclusion:
Fender design is created with the Drip, A-pillar, Sill, Bumper and Baffle mountings to assemble to the main BIW body of the car.
