FENDER DESIGN
AIM
To design a fender using a new age design software - NX - CAD
FENDER DEFINITION
Fender is the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
There are two types of fender
- FULL BUMPER TYPE
- HALF BUMPER TYPE
FULL BUMPER TYPE

The full bumper type fender was used in old cars, it covers the full area until the front lighting. But it has a lot of sheet metal material which is unnecessary and increases the weight of the fender. These type fenders are no longer used in the automobiles.
HALF BUMPER TYPE

Half bumper type are used in new generation vehicles where in the weight of the part is reduced and also the cost. Here the scrap can be saved during material stamping or cutting process by using the half bumper design. Here are two examples to understand the design.
Various materials are used to make cars. The main materials used for making cars, parts, and components, along with future trends, are steel, aluminum, magnesium, copper, plastics, and carbon fibers. The prime reason for using steel in the body structure is its inherent capability to absorb impact energy in a crash situation. The use of aluminum can potentially reduce the weight of the vehicle body. Recent developments have shown that up to 50% weight saving for the body in white can be achieved by the substitution of steel by aluminum.

VINTAGE TYPE FENDERS

Why is it called a fender in a car?
Because it “fends off” other things colliding with your car: other cars, animals, fire hydrants, Batmobiles, whatever…and takes the damage upon itself to save damage to the rest of your car.

There are generally 5 mountings on a fender
1. Body
2. A-Pillar
3. Sill
4. Cowl
5. Drip

MASTER SECTION

DESIGN 0F DRIP AREA MOUNTING :
- The drip area of mounting of the fender is connected with the engine compartment , therefore the lot of design constraints are to be followed while designing the fender
- While designing the drip area we have to initially leave 200-300 mm for cowl top
- For placing the headlamp we have to leave at least 150 mm at the front while designing the fender
- Two darts are added on the longer side of the drip area in order to provide the stiffness and adds strength to the part
- Embossing are provided on the mounting to strengthen them during fastening

DESIGN OF SILL MOUNTING AREA :
Sill is the panel directly below the bottom of the door supporting the floor and may be used to combine the floor and the body
The bottom end of the fender is mounted on the sill body for reinforcement of the fender panel , thus the sill mounting position is designed with holes and emboss

DESIGN OF BUMPER MOUNTING AREA :

Bumper mounting area is used to fix the plastic bumper to the fender with the help of the fasteners
DESIGN OF A-PILLAR MOUNTING AREA :
The A -pillar is the structural pillar that combines the body to the roof this make the sides of the windshield rest front fenders are fastened to the A -pillar to form a robust structure

DESIGN OF BAFFLE MOUNTING AREA :
Baffle mounting or mudguard are clip fit type of mounting on the inner side of the fender arch over the Tyre . it protects the car engine compartment and pedestrians from causing injuries from chip out debris on the road when the car is in motion . they are mounted on the fender using a special type of locking clips which are made up of plastics .

APPLYING OF THICKNESS TO THE SURFACE .
The thickness of 0.75 mm inward on the final sewed surface of the fender to the sheet metal parameters

CONCLUSION
Finally design of fender is done with the help of NX-CAD software by following the master section.
