Fender Design
AIM :
To design the BIW(Body in white) of front fender using the fender skin data and provided master section by using NX CAD.
Introduction :
Fender is the american english term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well. It's primary purpose is to prevent sand, stones, mud, liquid and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fender are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

Types of Fenders :
There are two types of fenders as follow
- Full Bumper Type
- Half Bumper Type
Full Bumper Type :
This is not commonly used because this design is more scrap producing one during manufacturing. The blank of steel or aluminum usedto produce this type has more wastages. This type is not economically good to manufacture.

Half Bumper type :
This types of fenders most commonly used. The con's of full bumper type is satisfied in this design, and the blank area of wastage while producing the part is drastically reduced by scrap management.

Purpoes of Fender :
Cleanliness : Protect the car, occupants and passers by from items, water, mud, snow, ice, thrown off the tires as you drive.
Safety : Protects pedestrain from the wheel, e.g. its better to be it by a laterally moving fender than a rolling tire, keeps loose, streaming items from being wrapped up in a rolling wheel.
Aerodynamics : Smooths the car profile so you don't get a lot of drag off the uncovered wheels. Some fenders are enclosed on the side for this.
General Appearance : Looks better with fender, gives a finished look, looks more streamlined.
Design of Front Fender
Master section is given to create the drip area and for the still mount, Bumper mount and A pillar mount design was done according to the engineering standard.
- Drip Area
- Sill Mount
- Bumper Mount
- A Pillar Mount
- Splash/Baffle Mount
The below is the provided Master Section To Create Drip Design

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS:
- As per the master-section provided the location of drip should be at 150mm from the bumper side and the gap of 200mm from the A-pillar.

2.Check for the wheel arch radius and design of the fender outer by following the different regulations.
3.The clearance distance should be maintained between the hood and the base drip area of about 200mm when the hood is at an open-angle.
4.Clearance should be provided for the nutting tool to assemble the fender with the body of the car.

Conclusion:
The front fender of a car is designed by following the pedestrian's safety and in order to guard the engine compartment beside the vehicle.
