Fender Automotive BIW Design and development

Project-2: Fender

  • In this project, you will work on designing the front fender of a Sport Utility Vehicle. You will develop the outer flange from the styling.
  • You will design the Bumper, Sill, A-Pillar, and Body-side mounts. You will also design the drip area (Engine compartment mount) based on the given master section.
  • Finally, you will design the cladding and fender protector from the wheel arch styling and design mounts on the fender, for the same
  • You will ensure that the CAD output satisfies all the tolerances and requirements for the deep drawing process.
  • Prepare a detailed report with all the relevant images included for the mounting points created and the design parameters followed.

Data to be used:

FENDER DESIGN

1. FENDER
Fender is that the English term for a part of an automobile (vehicle body of car) that
frames the wheel well (the fender underside). Its main purpose is to shield wheels and
protect both passenger's compartment and pedestrians from projection of water, mud
and stones. Fender is one among the styling components which is exposed to customers
from which cannot be welded. Most of the assembly joining is finished using fasteners,
retailer clip and proper fitting. Fenders are either fabricated from steels or
thermoplastics.

TYPES OF FENDERS:
1.Full bumper tyre
This kind of fender was utilized in the late 80's car, as fenders are generally accustomed
protect from the dust, stones and dirt being deposited on the car. But this sort of fender
takes more material compared to the Half fender Type i.e. Two half bumper type fenders
will be manufactured from one full bumper type fender.
2. Half Bumper Type:
This is the new convention model fender used in the current era among the car
manufactures since it reduces the burden and also the cost constrains.

Fender Point Mountings:
1. Drip Area
2. Bumper Mounting
3. Splash Cover / Wheel Well
4. Sill Mounting
5. Body Mounting
Design Considerations:
1. Embosses are provided to extend the strength
2. The corners flanges are smoothened to ease the productivity of the part
3. Fillet of 2-3mm is provided to avoid sharp corners and edges.
4. Uniform wall thickness of 0.75 mm is maintained.
5. The wheels that are outside the fender are more susceptible to Chipping than the
wheels that are located inside the fender. Hence the wheels that are inside the fender
are mostly preferred. 6. Darts are provided on some areas to boost the stiffness of the
mountings to avoid NVH issues.
