Design of backdoor
Design of back door:
Back Door:
The Back door is typically hinged, but sometimes attached by other mechanisms such as tracks, in front of an opening which is used for entering and exiting a vehicle.
A vehicle door can be opened to provide access to the opening, or closed to secure it. These doors can be opened manually, or powered electronically.
Back door is usually used to close the boot space, which is used to carry the luggages. The back door should also be strong enough to withstand and dissipate the impact caused during any collisions.
Types of Back Door :
- Top Mounted
- Side Mounted
- Bottom Mounted
As the name indicates the top mounted back doors are mounted at the top, when opened the door stays at the top. Usually found in most sedans and hatchbacks.
For side mounted, the doors are mounted on the side and opens side ways. Usually found in SUVs like Scorpio, Xylo etc.
Same for bottom mounted.
Components of Back Door :
The components found in the assembly of backdoor are
- Outer panel
- Inner panel
- Hinge and its reinforcement
- Wiper motor reinforcement
- Latch & striker and its reinforcement.
Outer Panel:
The outer panel is produced in two parts, upper and the lower. It is basically the A Styling surface. With the given A Surface, the surface defects has been rectified and thickened. Hemming is also done in outer panel and required reliefs are provided in the corners. Below is the Outer Panel.

Inner Panel:
The Inner panel is the one which gives the strength to the part. The inner panel is designed by offsetting the A surface and by doing necessary modifications. The inner panel accomodates the hinge reinforcement, gas stay reinforcement as well as the wiper motor reinforcements. For the inner panel the sealing flanges are also developed. And regions which has to be attached to the outer panel through mastics are also developed. Embosses are created in the inner panel to provide more strength. The shape of emboss should be in such a way that the impact caused by collision is absorbed by the backdoor and reduces the damage inside of the vehicle. Below is the inner panel.

Draft check:
Most sheet metal parts are produced by drawing. Minimum draft of 7 degs is required for release of the part.

Conclusion:
The backdoor assembly is designed as per the design requirements with the provided A Surface.
