Creating Walls, Partition walls and Floors for a residential layout using REVIT
Creating Walls, Partition walls and Floors for a residential layout using REVIT
Introduction:
The revit platform for building information modelling is a design and documentation systems that supports the design, drawings and schedules required for building project. Bim delivers informationa baout project desgn, scope, quantites, and phases when you need it.
Architecture tab of the revit software contains various basic options to help the craetion of a structure and these are:
- wall: creates a non -structural wall in building model.
- Door: Adds door to the building model.
- Window: Adds window to the building model.
- Components: Places an element in the building model, based on the selected element type.
- Column: Adds a vertical load bearing element to the building model.
- Roof: Create a roof using building foot print to defines its boundaries.
- ceiling: Creates a ceiling at a specified distance above the level in which its resides.
- Floor: Creates a floor for the current level of the building model.
- Curtain system : Creates a floor for the curtain system on the face of a mass or generic model.
- curtain grid: Creates a grid line in the curtain wall or curtain system.
- Mullion: A creates vertical or horizontal mullion in a curtain grid,
- Railing: craetes a railing by sketching the railing path.
- Stairs: Adds a stair to the building model by creating a common run, landing and support components.
- Ramp: Adds a ramp to the building model.
- Then various other options include rooms, room tags , area tag and area etc,..
Structure tab helps in creating structural elements of the building.
Steel tab contains steel related elements.
system tabs contains various systems like ducts, fabiracation systems etc,..
Insert tab helps in inking other files to the revit file.
Annotate tab contains options to add texts dimensions etc.. to the buildng model.
Analyze tab helps the structural analysis.
collaborate tab helps in the collaborating works of varios discpline.
view tab contains various options to view the builiding model.
Manage tab, add ins tab and modify tab are the other tabs in the ribbon of the revit software.
1) Use the project file created from Week 2. Use it for this assignment. Based on your layout from week 2, using floor tool under architecture tab and select the floor with appropriate material and thickness using the property browser create a layout in the Ground floor Level. Align the floor plan with grids created from week 2
Aim: To create the floor for the layout craeted in week-2 and provide the appropriate materials and thickness of the floor.
Procedure:
- Intially open the week2 assignment

- Now, in oreder to create the floor, go to architecture tab of the ribbon and choose the floor option.

- NOw choose the pick boundary option and pick the boundary walls of the building modewl.
- Now go the property browser and click edit type. duplicate the floor name as generic-4".
- then edit the structure option to change the material and thickness to the 4".
- then click on ok and apply.

RESULT :
modifying the floor amterial and the thickness to 4"

2) Add walls based on the floor layout. Pick lines or use the draw tool to modify the boundary of walls. Use the property browser to select appropriate material and thickness for walls. After creating the walls verify using the property browser to see if the top and bottom of the walls are constrained.
Aim: To add the walls to the floor layout and provide materials and apporpiate thickness to the wall created.
Procedure:
- Open week 2 revit file.
- Then, click on walls in the architecture tab of the ribbon.

- Then move to property browser to edit the wall thickness.
- Change the top constraint to level2.
- Provide the wall thickness as required.

- Now, inproperty browser go to edit type for walls and edit the structure option to change the amterial and thickness, if needed.

- Then click ok and apply.
- Hence, the walls thus created as shown below.
2a. According to me, connecting walls with associated levels is beneficial. This is because any change in the height of the levels will be automatically reflected in the walls too. This reduce our effort to orient it accordingly.
2b. Modelling walls by height or by depth, both method is covienent, but i mostly use by height method, as we can adjust the height of the walls as needed more easily.
3) Copy the model elements ( wall, floor ) modelled to Ground Floor Level and paste it aligned to First Floor Level . Use modify tab to utilize copy and paste options to align
elements to a different level
Aim: To copy the model elements modelled to ground floor level and paste it aligned to first floor level.
Procedure:
- In order to create the next floor, intially move to front view, i.e elevation.

- Now, select the entire floor.
- Then in the modify tab choose copy to clipboard.
- Then in the paste option: aligned to selected level--->2

- The 3D view is given as.

- Front elevation in realistic view.

4) Use interior partition walls to create separate rooms within your residential unit. The model must include the following rooms
Aim: To craete interior partion walls to craete seperate rooms within the residential unit. The model must include the following rooms.
a. Living Room/ Drawing Room ( 15’ X 18’)
b. Dining Room (9’ X 11’)
c. Bed Room ( 9’ X 12’ and 15’ X 11’)
d. Rest Room ( 10’ X 12’ )
e. Kitchen (8’ X 10’)
Procedure:
- Initially, go to architecture tab----> walls.
- Then the properties select interior walls and create the model from the layout created.
- Then again go to architecuture tab---> choose components-----> load family----> Then include furtintures, lighting, beds, chairs etc in the model.

5) Based on week 2 assignment, the components to be included in a residential unit were inserted to the Revit file. Place these components in appropriate locations to add details to your residential model
a. Place Doors and windows in the wall at appropriate locations
b. The Living Room must include furniture set, couch table and TV desk and shelf cabinets
c. The Dining Room must include a table and chairs serving the purpose of eating
d. Bed Room must include a bed set, shelf, lighting and individual study desk and chair
e. Rest room should include bath tub and plumbing fixtures discussed in class
f. Kitchen should include countertops, gas stove cabinet and shelves to store food items
g. The wash/storage room can include washing machines and shelves to store clothes
All the components are available in Revit Library. Use them to place at appropriate locations to add details to your model. Use 3D navigation to check the model and its authenticity on a real time basis to verify the model
Aim: To add the components that should be included in a residential unit like furnitures, Door window etc..
Procedure:
- Go to architecture tab-----> components ---->place a component-----> load families----> Then add differnt components like door and window, furniture, lightings, shelves etc in the residential model created.
- Then go to view tab ----> camera. Then create views of different rooms.
