Creating Architectural and Structural model with 3D rendering using REVIT

Creating Architectural and Structural model with 3D rendering using REVIT

Here are the steps on how to create an architectural and structural model with 3D rendering using Revit:

  1. Create a model for the project. Open Revit software and create a new project.
  2. Create a grid and level. A grid is a system of lines that helps you to organize your model. A level is a horizontal plane that defines the height of your model.
  3. Create the foundation. The foundation is the base of your building. It can be a slab, footings, or a combination of both.
  4. Create the columns. Columns are vertical structural members that support the weight of the building.
  5. Create the beams. Beams are horizontal structural members that connect columns and transfer loads between them.
  6. Create the walls. Walls are vertical elements that enclose the building and provide structural support.
  7. Create the roofs. Roofs are the topmost elements of a building and protect it from the elements.
  8. Create the finishes. Finishes are the materials that cover the surfaces of the building.
  9. Create the 3D rendering. Once you have created the model, you can create a 3D rendering of it. This can be done using the built-in rendering tools in Revit or by using a third-party rendering software.

1) Select the type of structure you want to build from one of the three below:
        a. Multi-Unit Residential Apartment
        b. Office Buildings
        c. School

Ans: I choose Multi-Unit Residential Apartment as my Designed Structure

2) Assume reasonable assumptions for geographic and location details for your project modeling. Based on assumptions and type of structure selected identify the modeling requirements from NBC

Ans: Here are some reasonable assumptions for geographic and location details for your project modeling, along with the corresponding modeling requirements from the National Building Code (NBC):

  • Geographic location: The building is located in a seismically active area.
  • Location: The building is located in a coastal area.
  • Type of structure: The building is a high-rise building.

Based on these assumptions, the following modeling requirements from the NBC apply:

  • Seismically active area: The building must be designed to withstand the forces of an earthquake. This includes using special structural elements and materials, and designing the building to be flexible so that it can withstand the shaking without collapsing.
  • Coastal area: The building must be designed to withstand the forces of a tsunami. This includes raising the ground floor above the expected flood level, and using special structural elements and materials that can withstand the force of the waves.
  • High-rise building: The building must be designed to withstand the forces of wind and fire. This includes using special structural elements and materials, and designing the building to have a fire-resistant exterior.

In addition to these specific requirements, the NBC also has general requirements that apply to all buildings, such as the following:

  • The building must be designed to provide adequate safety for the occupants in the event of a fire.
  • The building must be designed to provide adequate ventilation and natural light.
  • The building must be designed to be accessible to people with disabilities.

These are just a few of the modeling requirements that you need to consider when creating an architectural and structural model for a building. The specific requirements will vary depending on the location, type of structure, and other factors. It is important to consult with a qualified engineer or architect to ensure that your model meets all applicable requirements.

3) Using the structural model, include the following components based on the type of structure selected
        a. Foundation – Isolated / Wall/Matt Foundation
        b. Columns
        c. Beams Connected to Columns
        d. Roof Framing/ Truss
        e. Floor / Decks
        f. Floor Openings for Elevators and Stairs

Ans: The structural components that you need to include in your model, based on the type of structure selected:

  • Foundation: The foundation is the base of the structure and it supports the weight of the entire building. The type of foundation that you need will depend on the type of structure, the soil conditions, and the loads that the structure will be subjected to.
    • Isolated foundation: This type of foundation is used for small structures that are not subjected to heavy loads. It consists of a single footing that supports each column.
    • Wall foundation: This type of foundation is used for larger structures that are subjected to heavier loads. It consists of a continuous footing that supports the walls of the structure.
    • Matt foundation: This type of foundation is used for very large structures that are subjected to very heavy loads. It consists of a large, flat slab that supports the entire structure.
  • Columns: Columns are vertical structural members that support the weight of the building above them. They are typically made of concrete or steel.
  • Beams: Beams are horizontal structural members that transfer loads between columns. They are typically made of concrete or steel.
  • Roof framing/truss: The roof framing is the system of beams and columns that supports the roof of the structure. It can be made of wood, steel, or concrete.
  • Floor/decks: Floors and decks are the horizontal surfaces that provide a walking surface and support the weight of the occupants and furniture. They can be made of wood, concrete, or steel.
  • Floor openings for elevators and stairs: Elevators and stairs need openings in the floor to allow people to move between different levels of the building. These openings need to be properly supported by beams or columns.

4) Using the architectural model, include the following components based on the type of structure selected
        a. Wall Layout with appropriate material and finishing
        b. Exterior façade with fancy finish
        c. Interior partition walls to size rooms
        d. Components to add details to a room ( Desk, Chair, Lighting, Plumbing fixtures)
        e. Add components such as stairs Elevators
        f. Have at-least one side of the building with curtain walls and glass panels
        g. Include interior and exterior lighting fixtures
        h. Place proper topographic components from outside ( Trees, Parking, Plants) to add details to the model

Ans:  Here are the architectural components that you need to include in your model, based on the type of structure selected:

  • Wall layout with appropriate material and finishing: The wall layout is the arrangement of the walls in the building. The materials and finishing of the walls will depend on the type of structure and the desired aesthetic.
  • Exterior façade with fancy finish: The exterior façade is the exterior surface of the building. The finish of the façade can be made of a variety of materials, such as brick, stone, concrete, or glass.
  • Interior partition walls to size rooms: Interior partition walls are the walls that divide the interior of the building into rooms. The materials and finishing of the partition walls will depend on the type of structure and the desired privacy.
  • Components to add details to a room (Desk, Chair, Lighting, Plumbing fixtures): The components that you add to a room will depend on the type of room and the desired functionality. For example, a bedroom might have a bed, dresser, nightstand, and lamp, while a bathroom might have a toilet, sink, and shower.
  • Add components such as stairs and elevators: Stairs and elevators are necessary for people to move between different levels of the building. The type of stairs and elevators that you need will depend on the size and height of the building.
  • Have at least one side of the building with curtain walls and glass panels: Curtain walls are non-load-bearing walls that are made of glass and metal. They are often used on the exterior of buildings to provide natural light and views.
  • Include interior and exterior lighting fixtures: Lighting fixtures are necessary to provide light in the building. The type of lighting fixtures that you need will depend on the size and layout of the building.
  • Place proper topographic components from outside (Trees, Parking, Plants) to add details to the model: The topographic components that you add to the model will depend on the location of the building and the surrounding environment. For example, a building in a city might have trees and parking, while a building in a rural area might have plants and fields.

5) Provide a set of drawings in an architectural and structural model to list the following details with categories and appropriate sheet templates included
        a. Floor Plans with Annotations
        b. Elevations
        c. Sections

Ans:  Here are the details that you need to include in your architectural and structural model drawings, along with the appropriate sheet templates:

  • Floor plans with annotations: Floor plans are two-dimensional drawings that show the layout of the building's interior. They should include all of the walls, doors, windows, furniture, and other fixtures. The annotations should identify the different rooms and spaces, as well as the dimensions of the building. The sheet template should be labeled "Floor Plans" and should include a title block, scale, north arrow, and other relevant information.
  • Elevations: Elevations are two-dimensional drawings that show the exterior of the building from different sides. They should include all of the walls, doors, windows, and other features that are visible from the outside. The annotations should identify the different materials used in the construction of the building. The sheet template should be labeled "Elevations" and should include a title block, scale, north arrow, and other relevant information.
  • Sections: Sections are two-dimensional drawings that show a cutaway view of the building. They should show the interior of the building, including the walls, floors, ceilings, and other features. The annotations should identify the different materials used in the construction of the building, as well as the structural elements. The sheet template should be labeled "Sections" and should include a title block, scale, north arrow, and other relevant information.

6) Using the Rendering settings, Render images of the 3D model produced and include the rendered images to the drawing sheets
        a. Rendering from interior rooms
        b. Rendering from out showing topographic features
        c. Rendering through structural framing

Ans:  you can use the rendering settings in Revit to create photorealistic images of your 3D model. Here are the steps on how to do it:

  1. Open the 3D view that you want to render.
  2. In the View tab, click the Rendering panel.
  3. In the Rendering dialog box, click the Render button.
  4. In the Render dialog box, you can adjust the rendering settings, such as the quality, the lighting, and the materials.
  5. Click the Render button to render the image.

Once the image is rendered, you can save it to a file or include it in your drawing sheets.

Here are some additional tips for creating rendered images of your 3D model:

  • Use the right quality settings. The quality settings will affect the amount of time it takes to render the image and the level of detail in the image.
  • Use the right lighting. The lighting will affect the mood and atmosphere of the image.
  • Use the right materials. The materials will affect the appearance of the objects in the image.
  • Experiment with different settings to see what works best for your image.

Here are some specific renderings that you can create for your architectural and structural model:

  • Rendering from interior rooms: This type of rendering will show the interior of the building, including the furniture, lighting, and other fixtures. You can use this type of rendering to show the spatial relationships between different rooms and to showcase the design of the interior.
  • Rendering from out showing topographic features: This type of rendering will show the exterior of the building, including the surrounding landscape. You can use this type of rendering to show the relationship between the building and its surroundings and to highlight the topographic features of the site.
  • Rendering through structural framing: This type of rendering will show the structural elements of the building, such as the beams, columns, and walls. You can use this type of rendering to show the design of the structural system and to highlight the strength and stability of the building.

7) Print the set of drawing sheets created and submit the drawings from the architecture and structure model

Ans:  Once you have created the set of drawing sheets, you can print them using the following steps:

  1. Go to the File tab.
  2. Click Print.
  3. In the Print dialog box, select the printer that you want to use.
  4. In the Print Range section, select the sheets that you want to print.
  5. In the Print Options section, select the settings that you want to use.
  6. Click Print.

You can also export the drawing sheets to a file format, such as PDF, and then print them from another application.
