Concept on positioning of Columns

Q1-

1)Given plan is symmetric

2) Stiffness of the given plan is more in X- direction than in Y-direction.

3)Formula for redundancy, (2*j-3)

j=34, 2*34-3=65, and total no of members are equal to 41

hence it is not redundant.

Q2-

1)vertical geometric irregularity (setback)= If set back are unavoidable then their dimensioning should be properly done to avoid failure.

2)Soft storey= As some of the storey shown are prone to soft storey mechanism so tro avoid it steel bracings can be used if usage shear is not permitted due to achitechtural reasons

3)In plan discontinuity in vertical element= lateral load resisting elements should be continuied from ground to top

Q3-

1)As ground floor is open which may cause soft storey mechanisim of happen

2) Stair case and one infill wall is located in the left corner of the building which moves the center of stiffness which caused the torsional effect due to which right bottom corner was most susciptible for damage

3) As columns are arrange to provide stiffness in y-direction and infill walls are also arranged in that directions there may be chances that stiffness get reduced in x-direction and frames on which stiffness was dependent do not have proper dimensioning.
