Concept on positioning of Columns

1)

Aim: Commenting on the layout of the structure looking into aspects of symmetry, redundancy and bi directional stiffness and ductility.

The layout is symmetric, Since the structure is symmetric the redundancy is increased and more reliable in the areas where there is more earthquake and also since it is symmetric the uniformity of the structure is also increased. Ductility place a very important role in the ultimate limit state where high strength, low probability prone earthquake areas the smaller the strength the larger ductility is required as more forces is reduced more ductility is required so if the area is less earthquake prone then the structure is ductile and also the structure is symmetric it has a lateral stiffness so no damage for the building.

2)

Aim: Identifying the possible sources of irregularity in the building

The possible type of irregularities for the given structure are soft storey irregularity

Stiff and strong upper floor due to masonary fill

The column in one storey is longer than the above

The Enginner should follow the provisions to avoid the irregulrities:

1.The building is torsionally irregular so the building framing must be revised.

2.The mass irregulrity is avoided by providing light weight concrete/ Low weight masonary or by providing structure with more wood materials

3. The structure should be built in a well symmmetric manner

4. The columns which are provided on the structure should be of same size and height throughout the building.

5. The weight of the building from ground floor should decrease towards top (Constructing swimming pools on top floor should be avoided in earthquke prone areas)

3)

Aim: Commenting on the features of the structural design and of the layout of infills which are important for earthquake resistance and seismic performance

Structure is not symmetric

Masonary fill is very high

Larger strength is provided hence low ductility

Redundancy in the vertical direction is not provided properly

Solution:

• Structure should be symmetric

• The mass irregulrity is avoided by providing light weight concrete/ Low weight masonary or by providing structure with more wood materials

• The weight of the building from ground floor should decrease towards top

• The structure should be well ductile

Redundancy should be properly provided both on horizontal and vertical direction.
