MODELLING OF BOEING 747-8 USING SOLIDWORKS
MODELLING OF BOEING 747-8 USING SOLIDWORKS
OBJECTIVE :-
To design BOEING 747-8 using given blueprint inputs with surface and solid modelling techniques.
INTRODUCTION :-
In this project, we learn to design BOEING 747-8 using advanced surface modelling techniques in SOLIDWORKS. We will use the blueprints to create the skeleton of the flight and then use various modelling techniques to design the outer surface body and solid bodies. Then the parts will be assembled in an assembly workbench and rendered as the final output.

DESIGN APPROACH METHODOLOGY :-

DESCRIPTION OF FEATURES USED :-
SOLID FEATURES :-
EXTRUDE :-
Extrude is used to create a solid body out of closed and open contour sketches in a specified direction.

CUT EXTRUDE :-
Cut extrude is used to cut a body with closed and open contour sketches in a specified direction.

REVOLVE BOSS BASE :-
It's used to create a solid body that revolves (rotate around the axis or reference line length) around an axis of 360 degrees or lesser than that. Here both closed and open profiles can be used to create a revolved profile.
FILLET :-
It's used to create a round profile of the sharp edges by applying a radius value.
CHAMFER :-
It's used to remove material of sharp corners and produce flat edges.

LINEAR PATTERN :-
It's used to create a series or parallel of the same features from a base one.

CIRCULAR PATTERN :-
It's used to create a circular pattern of the same features by selecting a circular edge for reference.
MOVE/COPY SOLID BODIES :-
It's used to translate, rotate and copy a solid or surface feature in a specified value along with the axis system.

SURFACE FEATURES :-
SURFACE EXTRUDE :-
It's used to create a surface out of closed and open contour sketches along with the sketch thickness in a specified direction.

RULED SURFACE :-
Ruled surface is used to create a surface by various options like perpendicular, normal, sweep etc to the base selection.

SURFACE EXTEND :-
It's used to increase the length of the existing surface along the surface direction.
BOUNDARY SURFACE :-
It's used to create a surface by selecting direction 1 (shape) and direction 2 (guide) or vice versa. And in this, we are having an option of trimming along both the directions based on the edges or sketches that are selected to get the required output.
SURFACE KNIT :-
It's used to knit the adjacent surfaces by applying the applicable tolerance value (0.01 cm maximum).

SURFACE FILL :-
It's used to patch an area with edges or sketches adjacent to them and use constraint curves.

SURFACE CUT :-
It's used to cut the body below or above the surface body.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES :-
PROJECTED CURVE :-
It's used to create a 3D curve from two different sketch profiles from different planes. It will have the view of two sketches in a single curve.

SPLIT LINE :-
It's used to project a profile on to a surface of both solid and surface models.
CONVERT ENTITIES :-
It's used to create a sketch profile out of a surface or edge from a solid body or a surface body.
PARTS OF BOEING 747-8 :-
FUESLAGE :-
It's the main body of 747-8 flight. It holds crew, passengers, cargo and engines.

BELLY FAIRING :-
It's also known as windshield where the landing gear is located. It's used to hold additional cargo and fuel.

NOSE CONE :-
It has ribs which are conductive strips used to drain electricity to the metal haul after the cone area. It's made up of quartz material which is an insulator, also it controls the aerodynamic force and protects from lighting strikes. It acts as a radome which means to protect radar from lighting strike or by surrounded weather condition.

PITOT TUBES :-
It's also known as pitot probe which is used to measure fluid flow velocity. Used to determine the speed of aircraft, water speed of boat, liquid, gas and air. And used to determine local flow velocity sir flow velocity at a given point (of time and other parameters) but not average flow velocity.

COCKPIT WINDOW :-
It's designed to repel water and has electric defroster built in. And it weighs 68 kgs and thickness of 76 mm.

WINDSHIELD WIPERS :-
It's very useful during ground offs, take off and landing. And it has individual control to the pilots appropriately.

PASSENGER WINDOWS :-
In Beoing 747-8 there are 250 windows in total. The outer pane is of 12 mm and inner pane of 4 mm thickness, it's seperated by air chamber of 6 mm. The total thickness of the windows results in 22 mm.
DOORS & HATCHES :-
In Boeing 747-8 there are six doors on each side of fueslage, it results in a total of 12 doors. And it has four hatces in total which are located on top of cockpit, right side below and in rear side of fueslage.

AUXILLARY POWER UNIT :-
It provides power to all the electrical systems other than propulsion and also known as APU in short term. It generated 115 V AC @ 400 Hz, while other APU's generate 28 V DC in single or three phase systems.

VERTICAL STABILIZER :-
It's used to reduce aerodynamic size lift anf provide directional stability, also kown as vertical tails. It has a static discharge points which is used to drain the electric current during lighting strikes.

HORZONTAL STABILIZER :-
It's used to maintain longitudinal balance and directional stability for the airplane.

WING :-
It's used to improve aerodynamic stability and increase fuel capacity. The length is 34 m and span is 68 m.
FLAPS & AILERONS :-
Aileron is known as wing or fin in French language, it controls rolling and movement aroung longitudinal axis. Flaps are also known as Trailing edges which is used to increase the lift of aircraft wing at given air speed and axial lift while take off.
FLAP TRACK FAIRINGS :-
It constrols the flaps mechanism of extending and retracting which is hydraulically operated. It's used to reduce drag and fuel consumption.

ENGINE :-
In Boeing 747-8 airplane, GENERAL ELECTRIC (GE) dual rotor axial flow engine is used. It can generate 6550 pounds / 296 kg of thrust and it's designed in such a way to reduce noise compared to other engines.
