Bird Strike - Project - 2

PROJECT 2 - BIRD STRIKE IN AERO ENGINE

AIM:

To perform a classic nonlinear transient dynamics problem of bird strike on Aero engine using generic explicit solver.

GIVEN MODEL:

Informations required to model the phenomenon:

  • Use elastic material for the bird as (2000MPa) and the casing as (200GPa).
  • Follow a consistent numbering approach 100000+ for nodes, 500000+ for elements, and 1000+ for the parts. All other keywords should be numbered within 10000-19999 while following a range for each one.
  • Material model for the blades are given.

PROCEDURE:

From the given Model of Bird strike in Aero engine which consist of four parts i.e. Engine Casing, Blades, Hub, cylindrical bird Model. We have to separate the Four given part and assign each a material and Section respectively.

ENGINE CASING:

BLADES:

HUB:

BIRD:

MATERIAL CARD:

Assign Material card for each Model separately and given the respectively Value of Young's Modulus, Density and Poisson's Ratio.

ENGINE CASING:

BLADES:

From the given Material for Blades as AL-4495-Material,We have used include card to import the Blades model into this Material and save it.

CURVE for AL-4495-Material

HUB:

BIRD:

SECTION CARD:

ENGINE CASING:

BLADES:

HUB:

BIRD:

Assign the Material and Section to their Respective Part Card.

Now open a new file and Create a Include Card and insert the four Model with their Respective Material and Section Card.

After including the Four part the model looks like:

BOUNDARY CARD:

To fix the Engine Casing in all DOF,create Boundary Spc and assign the Engine casing model and given all DOF as 1.So that it will be stable while the blades rotate.

VELOCITY CARD:

The velocity of engine casing and bird are given so that we can see the blade failure within a short span of time.

The angular velocity of the blades is given as 0.5 rad/ms.

The velocity of bird is assumed as 50Km/hr which is 13.8888m/s. the cylinder Bird model is about to travel along its own axis and impact on the blades.

CONTACT CARD:

  • Contact between bird and blades was created by using the Contact_Automatic_Nodes_to_Surface where the bird is Nodes and blades are Surfaces.

  • Contact between the blades with the other blades was created by using the Contact_Automatic_Single_Surface

  • Contact between Blades and the Hub was created by using the Contact_Tied_Surface_to_Surface.

  • Contact between Blades with the Engine casing was created by using the Contact_Surface_to_Surface.

CONTROL CARD:

  • The Control Termination is used to set the Termination time which is set as 5 ms.

  • The Control Energy card is used to calculate Hourglass energy, Stonewall energy, Rayleigh energy and sliding interface Energy.

  • The Control Hourglass is used to Control the hourglass effect in the Simulation

DATABASE CARD:

  • The timestep value of 0.1ms is given for Binary_D3plot and in ASCII option for GLSTAT, MATSUM, RCFORC and SLEOUT.
  • Database_Extent_Binary card with STRFLG = 1 to compute the elastic strain in the Simulation.

RENUMBERING:

The keywords like Nodes,Elements, parts etc are Renumbered individually by entering the StartID value and Click set and Renumber. To Follow a consistent numbering approach 100000+ for nodes, 500000+ for elements, and 1000+ for the parts. All other keywords should be numbered within 10000-19999 while following a range for each one.

Check the Model by Clicking the Model check in Keyword Manager and save it in main File and Run the simulation in LS Run.

MASS SCALING:

The har limit on Mass scaling is 8%

Trail 1: TSSFAC =0.9 DT2MS = -2.5e-4

The percentage increase is 1.3688

Trail 2: TSSFAC =0.9 DT2MS = -3.0e-4

The percentage increase is 4.2599

Trail 3: TSSFAC =0.9 DT2MS = -3.2e-4

The percentage increase is 6.1015

Trail 4: TSSFAC =0.9 DT2MS = -3.2e-4

The percentage increase is 7.8831 which is nearby 8%

OUTPUT:

MAXIMUM EFFECTIVE PLASTIC STRAIN:

ENERGY PLOT:

CONCLUSION:

The Simulation has been done by Impacting the bird on the aero engine blades. The given Model are assigned with Material,Section,Boundary,Contact and Control.Mass Scaling are used with different Trails. The results are extracted with Effective Stress,Effective Plastic Strain and Energy Plot.
