Benchmarking
Benchmarking
What is benchmarking?
Benchmarking in automobile industry involves structured comparison between similar products, service or process on same dimension of performance.
It can be used to compare availability and delivery of features in a product and in this form often provide the basic of consumer test and reviews. These looks at product and service and provide recommendation based on which is best or some form of ranking amongst competitor.
It is particularly useful when comparing not only performance but also practice – in other words what do the different organizations do to enable that performance to be delivered? And applied in this way it is a powerful tool in process innovation sin e studying how the ‘best’ achieve their performance can provide powerful clues for changing the way processes operate. Process benchmarking of this kind can operate at several levels:
- Between similar processes in the same factory or service branch
- Between different factories or service branches
- Between different competing organizations
- Between different sectors using the same process
So, benchmarking of this kind often involves a third party who can collect the data, make the comparison and provide feedback but all on a confidential basis.
The following best practices can be applied for benchmarking to ensure the right approach and the right outcome measurement.
BEST PRACTICES
- Obtain a detailed understanding of current process performance gaps to determine benchmarking points.
- Provide thorough documentation of benchmarking objectives and scope.
- Generate thorough current process documentation to avoid waste of time and resources as well as loss of project focus.
- Deliver primary metrics agreement to gauge pre- and post-gap analysis, track progress and improvements and institute measurement system analysis. (MSA)

The Tata Tigor was born directly from the same project that originated the Tata Tiago (internally called Kite 5) as it represents the four-door sedan version with a third rear volume. The Kite project was born in 2013 with the aim of developing two new compact cars, modern and inexpensive to offer on the Indian market in place of the Tata Zest and Bolt models that did not have the desired success as they were nothing but the profound restyling of the previous Indica Vista and Indigo Manza. In particular, Tigor replaces the Tata Zest.
Design
- The face is dominated by the large black grille and smoked headlamps while in profile, the car continues with notchback or ‘style back’ design as TATA has termed.
- It looks particularly European in its appearance thanks to the bright colour schemes and design of the alloy wheels.
- The rear gets a nice chrome strip above the number plate holder and a black insert in the bumper which contrasts well with the rest of rear design.
- The minimal change theme has been carried over to the interior too.
- Same layout two-tone colour scheme, elements and space inside the cabin of the tigor AMT as compared to its manual counter parts.
Engine specification and performance
- The engine range consists of the petrol 1.2-liter Revotronthree-cylinder 12V that delivers 85 horsepower and 114 Nm of maximum torque with a 5-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automatic and a diesel 1.1-liter Revotorq three-cylinder common rail 70 horsepower 12V delivering 140 Nm of maximum torque, combined with a 5-speed manual transmission.
- Things improve in the sport mode as the gearbox allow you to hold the revs for a longer period and build up more steam as required.
- In the spirit of bring a mildly powered front wheel drive car, it will understeer when you hit the limit of grip and it is best if you glide the car from turn to turn rather than forcing it to go through the corners.
- Tata tigor AMT is available in two variant XZA and XTA.
- It has two drive modes and 419 litre boots.
