Surface Modelling Of An Aston Martin Car Using solid works

Objective:- Aston Martin Car has good graphics and contains complexity in its model meanwhile its technology is very advanced so as a learner it gives a very good opportunity to learn different-different tools of Solid works in an advanced manner. The tools I used to make this project are very useful for Surface modeling and more or less solid modeling and these tools are used at a very large scale in the automotive and aerospace industries too.

 BOUNDARY SURFACE:

The boundary surface feature lets you create surfaces that can be tangent or curvature continuous in both directions (all sides of the surface). In most cases, this delivers a higher quality result than the loft tool.

SURFACE EXTRUDE:

create extruded surfaces from models that include 2D or 3D faces and knit the extruded surfaces to surrounding features.

RULED SURFACE:

The Ruled Surface command creates surfaces that extend out in a specified direction from selected edges.

Video Tech Tip: 5 Types of Ruled Surfaces in SOLIDWORKS - YouTube

SURFACE EXTEND:

Extend a surface by selecting an edge, multiple edges, or a face.

LOFT SURFACE:  Loft Surfaces are surfaces generated by multiple 3D Curves or existing edges creating a smooth tangency between the selected curves. Match Points are created between each selection denoting the orientation and path of the loft surface.

SURFACE TRIM:

surface, plane, or sketch as a trim tool to trim intersecting surfaces. You can also use a surface in conjunction with additional surfaces, as mutual trim tools.

SOLIDWORKS: Trim Surface, Split, & Split Line - What's the Difference? -  YouTube

SURFACE FILL:

The Filled Surface  feature constructs a surface patch with any number of sides, within a boundary defined by existing model edges, sketches, or curves, including composite curves.

SURFACE KNIT:

Knit Surface  tool to combine two or more faces and surfaces into one.

Knit Surface - 2019 - SOLIDWORKS Help

SURFACE CUT:

Surface cut a solid model by removing material with a surface or plane. With multibody parts, you can select which bodies to keep.

SOLID FEATURES:

EXTRUDE:

Extrude tool is used to extend a sketched profile in one or two directions as either a thin feature or a solid feature. An extrude operation can either add material to a part (in a base or boss) or remove material from a part.

CUT EXTRUDE:

Extruded cut feature removes material from the part.

REVOLVE BOSS BASE:

To create a revolve feature: Create a sketch that contains one or more profiles and a centerline, line, or edge to use as the axis around which the feature revolves. Click one of the following revolve tools.

FILLET:

Fillets describe rounded corners of a design (or part) that help to reduce stresses and prevent rapid deformation at the corners of the part.

SOLIDWORKS Partial Fillet & Chamfer are new for SOLIDWORKS 2019

CHAMFER:

A chamfer is the sloped or angled edges or corners of a part design. It is an antonym of the fillet. Instead of having a curved shape, a chamfer is straight and has a sharp angle.

Chamfer Enhancements SOLIDWORKS 2017 Updates - YouTube

FLEX:

The flex feature calculates the extents of the part using a bounding box. The trim planes are then initially located at the extents of the bodies, perpendicular to the Z-axis of the triad.

LINEAR PATTERN:

Linear patterns to create multiple instances of one or more features that you can space uniformly along one or two linear paths.

Perfectly Symmetric SOLIDWORKS Linear Pattern!

CIRCULAR PATTERN:

Circular patterns to create multiple instances of one or more features that you can space uniformly around an axis.

How to apply circular pattern to cut-extrude feature in Solidworks | MOVE/COPY SOLID BODIES:

It is used to  move, rotate, and copy solid and surface bodies, or place them using mates.

PROJECTED CURVE:

Create a Curve as the intersection of two projected sketches. Note that the projections from one sketch must intersect the other in one contiguous curve for this operation to succeed.

3D Sketch Vs Projected Curve (Solidworks 2016/2017) - YouTube

SPLIT LINE:

The Split Line. tool projects an entity (sketch, solid, surface, face, plane, or surface spline) to surfaces, or curved or planar faces. It divides a selected face into multiple separate faces.

INTERSECTION CURVE:

Intersection Curve. opens a sketch and creates a sketched curve at the following kinds of intersections: A plane and a surface or a model face.

CONVERT ENTITIES:

Whenever we need to make a sketch entity that matches other geometry of our model we can use the Convert Entities tool.

After designing the part components, we have worked upon the assembly and the photo rendering of the Aston Martin car which gives it a complete and realistic view.

Let us discuss what are the features and properties used in the entire model to design different parts :

         1.Blueprint Setup

A blueprint is a reproduction of engineering drawing using contact print process on light sensitive sheets. Blueprint is a guide for making something.

 2 .Roof

An automobile roof or car top is the portion of an automobile that sits above the passenger compartment, protecting the vehicle occupants from sun, wind, rain, and other external elements.

  1. 6. Rear and Front Bumper

A bumper is a structure attached to or integrated with the front and rear ends of a motor vehicle,to absorb impact in a minor collision, ideally minimizing repair costs.Stiff metal bumpers appeared on automobiles as early as 1904 that had a mainly ornamental function. Numerous developments, improvements in materials and technologies, as well as greater focus on functionality for protecting vehicle components and improving safety have changed bumpers over the years.Bumpers ideally minimize height mismatches between vehicles.

8.Windows and Windshields

The windshield or windscreen is the front window, which provides visibility while protecting occupants from the elements. Modern windshields are generally made of laminated safety glass, a type of treated glass, which consists of, typically, two curved sheets of glass with a plastic layer laminated between them for safety, and bonded into the window frame.Windshields protect the vehicle's occupants from wind and flying debris such as dust, insects, and rocks, and provide an aerodynamically formed window towards the front.UV coating may be applied to screen out harmful ultraviolet radiation.

9.Doors

A car door is a type of door opening, typically hinged on its front edge, but sometimes attached by other mechanisms such as tracks, for entering and exiting a vehicle. Doors most often integrate side windows for visibility from inside the car and can be locked to secure the vehicle.Car doors may be manually operated or with power assist supplied by the vehicle.

12.Front and Rear Wheel

Wheel consists of rim, tyre and brake which make it the component that makes the connection between the car and the ground. The rim is an important strength component which ensures safe load carrying capacity of the car.It should have enough compressive strength and able to absorb shocks and impacts. The tyres are the main contact surface to the ground. The wheel also houses a disc brake rotor and its caliper. The designing of front and rearTo begin a revolved part is created on the right plane which is the rim now the spokes are sketched on the right plane and extruded wheels are similar the differences is in the size of the wheels.

13.Emblem

This part was entirely made using solid modelling.Extrude boss, extrude cut, mirror, combine etc are used.ASSEMBLY

Approach: Bottom- Up

Bottom- Up design is the traditional method. You will first design and model the part individually, then insert them into an assembly and use mates to position parts. To change parts you must edit them individually. These changes are then seen in assembly. If there is any interference in the assembly or changes required in the assembly you need to modify the components individually either in the assembly level or in the part document level.

After making all the parts the most important part of assembling the entire car to a single file begins. To start with bringing the body first and using its plane and geometry as a base for the entire solid assembly, the second part we bring in is the doors. The planes of doors made coincident mate with the curresponding planes of body. After that we bring hood, windows, front and rear windshields, grille and rear bumper  made coincident mates with the planes of body. For front and rear wheel , we use distance mates of 93.3 mm for front wheel and 92.2 mm for back wheels from the front plane. Finally the Aston Martin emblem fixed with the body.

PHOTOREALISTIC RENDERING

Rendering of the assembly is done to make good quality 2D images for the purpose of advertising and promotion of the products before selling it to the customers. Photorealistic rendering creates high quality images or motion graphics if available so as to look appealing in various environments and backdrops. We try to make it more realistic by giving it a camera view setting the desired lights and the focal distance creating the angle of the view and saving the camera angle which gave a realistic view to the car.Now we take our assembly file into solid works visualize where we start making the product more and more realistic with adding the background changing the and adjusting the brightness, shadow density and gamma levels according to the different requirements of the different backgrounds changing the color of the model and checking what suits the best with which background until we get the desired and astonishing product ready.
