SIDE POLE CRASH SIMULATION
Introduction : SOME SIDE IMPACTS INVOLVE A VEHICLE TRAVELLING SIDEWAYS INTO RIGID ROADSIDE OBJECTS SUCH AS TREES OR POLES.
SOFTWARE USED : Hyperworks Deskstop 2020
INTERFACE : Radioss Solver
In Euro NCAP’s test, a car is propelled sideways at 32 km/h against a rigid, narrow pole. The car is placed at right angles to the direction of motion, or as is done from 2015 onwards, at a small angle away from the perpendicular. Where a vehicle is equipped with a centre airbag to protect against the front seat occupants hitting each other, two average male side impact dummies are placed in the front seats. Where there is no centre airbag, single dummy is placed on the driver’s seat.

Objective : Importing the radioss file and checking the unit systems and creating a interface and assigning the recommeded parameters & creating the rigid pole, maintaining the mass balance of the car, creating the crosss-sectionals in required areas checking the intrusion of B-pillar, hinge pillar and fuel tank region. Concentrating the peak velocity Value on Inner door
Explaination :
- The rigid pole is a vertical metal structure beginning no more than 102mm above the
lowest point of the tires on the striking side of the test vehicle when the vehicle is
loaded as specified in Section 1 and extending at least 100mm above the highest point
of the roof of the test vehicle. - The pole is 254 ±3mm in diameter and set off from any mounting surface, such as a
barrier or other structure, so that the vehicle will not contact such a mount or support
at any time within 100ms of the initiation of the vehicle to pole contact. - Mark a line along the vertical centreline of the pole which may be used to check the
alignment of the test vehicle on the carrier.
Simulation Details :
- For running the simulation we need a starter file 0000.rad file which can be read by the solver to understand the program, Importing the neon_side_reduced_0000.rad file where you can download it from browser link .....
......Importing the file & cross check the model any changes to be done..........Observing the model of the car and understanding the cross-sectional areas where to be create.....the thing first we need to create rigid cyclincal pole of friction 0.1 and assign with requried values......and placing the pole near to the car area maintain the minimum amount of gap with pole and car with dimensions as follows
....
.....Creating the interface naming self contact with assign slave and master components, Istiff, Igap, Idel , stmin, fric , gapmin, intact, iform with best parameters....With card image of TYPE7...
Creating the cross-sections on Ground rails
......
Assigning the cross-sections in output blocks by selecting them and telling the solver to solve and go through with created cross-sections.....
Checking the intrusion of car parts like B-pillar, hinge pillar and fuel tank region creating a node on the B-pillar , hinge pillar and fuel tank and assigning them with local corodinate system to follow by the solver.....
Creating Intrusion node for Fuel tank
Creating Intrusion Node for Hinge pillar
Considering the body mass balance of the car and maintain in best value in case of accident occurance
Checking the model checker in case of any errors in case of no errors assigning the run time of 80ms and running simulation.......

ANIMATION EXPLANIATION :
- Displacemnet of the components in terms of ms is explained in contour plot.
- Real Time Simulation results are calucated.
- Distortion of node is observed.

DECLARATION :
This is a very severe test of a car’s ability to protect the driver’s head. As the loading on the car is so localised, deformation can be very high and the pole can penetrate deeply into the passenger compartment. Without effective protection, the pole would strike the head resulting in serious injuries. Head protection airbags – often curtain airbags mounted above the side windows but sometimes seat-mounted thorax/head airbags – have become a common solution but great care is needed to ensure effective performance of such devices.
- A concept of complete side pole impact crash test is done.
