Assignment 3

Objective: To run the given simulation with and without making element property improvements and list the differences.

1. The run time changed to 55ms.

2. Change the number of animation steps:

3. Run the simulation without any changes in element properties:

4. Open the "FIRST_RUN_0001.out" file to check the energy and mass error:

As visible, the energy error is 10.3% (almost in range of the acceptable limit of 10%) and negligible mass error 0.1659E-03 is observed.

5. Graphs:

a) Rigid Wall forces:

b) Internal energy, Contact energy, Hourglass energy, Total energy plots:

6. Changed the properties of shell elements for both the parts:

7. Energy and Mass error:

As shown in the above pic, with the help of right shell properties, the Energy error has been reduced to 0.1%, and the Mass error is 0.1695E-03.

8. Graphs:

a) Rigid Wall forces:

b) Internal energy, Contact energy, Hourglass energy, Total energy plots:

Comments:

a. QEPH shell has a direct impact on Hourglass energy, because of the higher number of integration points, which has reduced it to almost negligible.

b. Hence the total energy of the system is also constant since unaccounted energy is being lost in the form of Hourglass energy.

Conclusion: Basis on the above-given comparison, it can be said that choosing the right properties can enhance the quality of the results. Or the bad property selection gets visible in the results, and hence needs to be corrected.
