Week 2 Railwheel and Track

Objective: To run the simulation on Track and Wheel assembly under 2 different loads, and comapre the result for Total Deformation, Equivalent stress, and Life. Also, compare the results of Total Deformation calculated by Ansys with results using User Defined formula for 100K N load.

Case set up:

CASE 1:

1. The CAD is imported and the material is assigned:

2. Connections and Joints are defined as per the requirement of the problem as described in the tutorial video:

3. Analysis setting: The total process is divided into 5 steps, each translation being of 100 mm. Applied load is 100K N and translation joint

4. Meshing: Overall mesh size is 50mm and for critical surfaces is 32 mm.

5. The result is set up for the following:

a. Total Deformation

b. Equivalent Stress

c. Life

d. User defined expression as (Tobe calculated for 100K N load only):

sqrt(UX^2+UY^2+UZ^2),

where, UX, UY, UZ are the nodal degree of freedom, and the above expression helps to calculate the movement / displacement (considered as deformation here)

6. The results for all 4 are sown below:

7. The load is defined as parametric input and all the above mentioned results are compared, which are summarized as below:

As visible from the image below, the Total Deformation / Displacement remains same. While the Equivalent Stress increases considerably, and hence the life gets reduced.

CASE 2:

8. The comparison of Ansys calculated Total Deformation Vs User defined expression can be shown as below:

The results are same:

Conclusion: The load has a big impact on life of the parts.
