Assignment 1

Objective

Carry out the geometry cleanup operation on the given 3 files.

  • Part_1-Practice
  • Part_2-Clip Repair
  • Part_3-Mounting Bracket

There should not be any free edges, convert all of them into refine geometry.

  • Clean the geometry.
  • Extract midsurface.
  • Clean midsurface geometry.
  • Ignore holes less than dia 5mm.
  • Create 2D mesh with target length 5mm, min 3.5mm max 7mm.
  • And assign proper thickness, by creating a generic property.

Procedure

General steps-

  • In the first step the model file is imported in the hm software using the import option available in the hm menu.
  • Once the file is imported geometry checking is need to be performed to check the geometry for errors like open edges (i.e. free edges represented by red lines), intersecting planes (represented by yellow lines) , toggled edges (represented by blue lines) and duplicate surfaces.
  • After identifying the regions where modification is needed we can save the view for those regions.
  • Now we start going through each view and remove the errors in the geometry.

Part_1

  • In the part 1 once the geometry is imported it is found that the geometry is having open surfaces, duplicate surfaces and open edges.
  • The open surfaces can be closed using the filler surface option or by using ruled option for creating the surface.
  • Then duplicate surfaces are identified and then deleted.
  • After this the free edges can be removed using toggle edge option.
  • Once all the errors in geometry are removed it can checked by going to solid tab and try generating the solid using the surfaces, if the solid is getting generated then the geometry is ok.
  • Then we will go to mid surface option and generate the mid surface of the geometry.
  • Then we go to defeature, option and use the pin hole option to find the hole less than 5 mm diameter and remove them.
  • Then we go to auto mesh option and generate the required mesh.
  • We then refined the mesh using replace node, smooth, project tabs.
  • Then the checking of the generated mesh is performed using find edge and quality panel tabs and failing elements are then corrected.
  • Once the checking is done required thickness property is assigned to the middle surface collector.
  • And then the provided material is assigned to the middle surface collector.
  • Then the file is saved in the desired location.

Part_2

  • In the part 2 once the geometry is imported the geometry is checked for open surfaces, duplicate surfaces and open edges.
  • Then we will go to mid surface option and generate the mid surface of the geometry.
  • Then we go to defeature, option and use the pin hole option to find the hole less than 5 mm diameter and remove them.
  • After observing the model it is found out that the model is reflectable.
  • Then the model is trimmed about the plane through which it is reflectable.
  • Then we go to auto mesh option and select the half portion of surface and generate the required mesh.
  • We then refined the mesh using replace node, smooth, project tabs.
  • Then the mesh and reflected and the nodes are being equivalence.

Part_3

  • In the part 3 once the geometry is imported the geometry is checked for open surfaces, duplicate surfaces and open edges.
  • Then we will go to mid surface option and generate the mid surface of the geometry.
  • Then we go to defeature, option and use the pin hole option to find the hole less than 5 mm diameter and remove them.
  • Then we go to auto mesh option and generate the required mesh.
  • At the feature region having fillets the middle lines are toggled and ignore and mesh is generated with two rows of elements to satisfy the minimum length criteria.
  • We then refined the mesh using replace node, smooth, project tabs.
  • Then the checking of the generated mesh is performed using find edge and quality panel tabs and failing elements are then corrected.
  • Once the checking is done required thickness property is assigned to the middle surface collector.
  • Then the file is saved in the desired location.

Result and conclusion

In the above three models the 2-D shell modeling is performed on the three components. We learned about various procedures in the modeling of above three components like how to clean up the geometry before extracting the mid surface in part 1.

Then we learned how to refine the mesh and how to use the tools like reflect effectively to generate the mesh in part 2.

In part three we focused more on refining mesh keeping in mind the constraint of min length and max length maintaining the flow of mesh at the same time. We created mesh at feature region with two fillets only to satisfy the min length criteria.
