Assignment 1-2D Meshing Challenge
Assignment 1
Aim
To create and mesh the mid surface of the given models
Procedure
- It is mentioned that holes less than 5mm in Diameter can be ignored.
- Criteria given in Table 1
|
Min Length |
3.5 |
|
Max Length |
7 |
|
Holes<5mm in dia can be ignored` |
- So in parameter file settings if we change the range to 2.5 mm on remeshing hypermesh automatically fills such gaps

Figure 1

Figure 2
- In the first model, there are several free edges and manifold edges that need to be solved

Figure 3
- The free edges can simply be toggles and the manifold edge is simply an extra surface that can be deleted
- In the case of figure 4, it is simpler to simply delete the surface and create a new one

Figure 4
- This can be done by splitting the surface by creating a line and deleting it.

Figure 5

Figure 6

Figure7
- The mid surface can be creating by using the automatic mid surface option after which you can start meshing
- Toggle any unnecessary lines/areas that fail the min length criteria.

Figure 8
- Set the criteria accordingly in the criteria file settings in preferences.
- Mesh the model surface by surface and verify connectivity using edges in tools option.
- After verifying connecting solve any off elements/unnecessary trias using rebuild mesh/smooth/2d quality critieria tools/split/etc
- You can observe hypermesh ignoring holes less than 5mm dia after remeshing.

Figure 11

Figure 12
- Model 2 has several unnecessary nodes that can be deleted with temp node option.

Figure 15

Figure 16
- Model 3 is a completely symmetrical component

Figure 17
- Using auto midsurface option to generate the mid surface.
- The feature needs to have its construction lines rearranged to avoid min length failures as shown.
- It is possible to simply mesh one portion and copy it to the other surfaces using the position/reflect/rotate tools available

Learning Outcomes
- Mid surface and meshing in hypermesh
- Solvling off elements
- Using reflect/position/rotate/project tools
Conclusion
The given models have been meshed according to the given criteria
