Analysis of a plate with a hole using FEA

problem statement :

Perform a static analysis on two models of plate with holes. to create the model in Solidworks and perform the analysis.

The dimensions for the first case is as follows:

CASE 1

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm

The dimensions for the second case is as follows:

CASE 2

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm

Two holes of 30 mm diameter which are placed 90mm away from the central hole on both sides.

Objective
To create a model of a plate having a circular hole at its center and then, run a static analysis.
To create a model of a plate having a circular hole at its center and two more holes at a certain distance from the central holes then, run a static analysis.
Compare the results and suggest the best one.

theory :

Stress concentration: -
Stress Concentration is the location of an area of the element where the stress is significantly greater than its surrounding areas. The areas where the stress is concentrated in an element is known as stress concentration. Stress concentrations occur when there are irregularities in the geometry or material of a structural component that cause an interruption to the flow of stress.
Stress concentration at holes: -
The holes are made on any part to satisfy functional requirements, reduce weight, achieve the economic benefits, etc. As holes create an irregularity in geometry, stress concentration often occurs at these holes. The stress concentration might fail the part. This is not desirable in any case. Thus, analysis is run to study the stress concentration and get the FOS of the element. In our case, there are holes on a rectangular metal plate. The plate is stretched from one side while the other side is fixed. Thus, it will result in the stress concentration around the holes due to irregularities in geometry which causes interruption to the flow of stress.
boundary condition :
tensile load : 1000N(tensile)
mesh size : 3mm
material : alloy steel (material properties show as below )
case 1 :
rectangular plate with one hole on the surface
step to analysis
Click new study option to perform a static analysis and applied Alloy steel material to the model.
Boundary conditions: Alloy steel was applied as the material; one of the 120 mm X 30 mm face is fixed by selecting a fixed geometry and a tensile load is applied (1000N) on the opposite 120 mm X 30 mm face so that it stretches the plate.

Mesh: A mesh size of 3 mm (shown as fig) is chosen and applied.(show as fig )After that Selected a mesh option to create a mesh with fine size for accurate results and then selected mesh and run option to perform analysis for the created model.

The mesh is applied and the simulation is run. The plots are generated and compared. The results are tabulated in the results section of the report.

Compared results of stress, strain, and displacement

result:

Name value unit
vos mises stress 1.211x10^6 N/m^2
displacement 5241X10^-4 mm
strain 4667x10^6 -

case 2 :

rectangular plate with three hole on the surface

step to analysis

Click new study option to perform a static analysis and applied Alloy steel material to the model.
Boundary conditions: Alloy steel was applied as the material; one of the 120 mm X 30 mm face is fixed by selecting a fixed geometry.and a 1000N tensile load is applied on the opposite 120 mm X 30 mm face so that it stretches the plate.

Mesh: A mesh size of 3 mm (shown as fig)is chosen After that Selected a mesh option to create a mesh with fine size for accurate results and then selected mesh and run option to perform analysis for the created model.

The mesh is applied and the simulation is run. The plots are generated and compared. The results are tabulated in the results section of the report.
Compared results of stress, strain, and displacement
result :
Name value unit
vos mises stress 1.163x10^6 N/m^2
displacement 5.667x10^-4 mm
strain 4.470x10^6 -

Conclusion:

After running the simulation for the first case, the maximum Von mises stress was found to be 1.211×10^6 N/m^2. The displacement values were very low. From the results, it was observed that the maximum stress develops near the hole as expected since holes and notches in a plate represent the most vulnerable region. The strain values were also high near the hole with a maximum reaching 4.667×10^6. For the second case, the value of maximum von mises stress was 1.163×10^6 N/m^2. This was lower as compared to previous results. The value of strain followed the same pattern. Mesh size was kept the same and the maximum stress was still observed near the central hole of the plate.

so we can conclude that, Any irreugularities in the cross section or any abrupt changes will cause stress concentration the point where more stress produced.It will break easily
