Box Assembly

Objective:

To create a 3D model of sheet metal box assembly using siemens NX.

Introduction:

In this project an accurate to scale model of box assembly is created using Siemens NX in-order to understand and familiarize with different tools and methods of sheet metal design.

Design Methodology:

Description:

Siemens NX has a large set of sheet-metal tools. These tools have a wide range of applications.

For the box assembly, the following tools and features are used:

  1. Tab: The tab tool creates a base feature from a selected sketch. The direction of extrude can be adjusted manually. The thickness of the extrude can be edited locally or it can be set to the default global value provided in preferences => sheet-metal.
  2. Unbend: This tool unbends/flattens a selected body along a stationary face. The features to be flattened should be connected to the stationary face.
  3. Re-bend: The re-bend tool bends the selected parts of the body that were flattened using unbend tool.
  4. Flange: The flange tool creates a flange along a selected edge and adds a bend of set radius on that edge. The flange angle and the flange length can be adjusted locally as per the user’s requirement. Other adjustments such as direction and material position (inside or outside) can be changed as per the requirements.
  5. Closed corner: The closed corner tool extends two adjacent flanges or bends to create a closed feature without any openings.
  6. Dimple: The dimple tool lifts the selected face as per the drawn sketch. The face inside the sketch or outside the sketch can be lifted as per the design requirement. The lift distance, rounding radius and tolerance can be adjusted manually.
  7. Hem flange: The Hem flange tool folds the edge of the sheet onto itself for creating smooth edges of increasing the stiffness. It has various options such as open flange, closed flange, open loop etc. the radius values for open flange types can be manually changed.
  8. Bead: The bead tool is used to lift a surface along the selected sketch. It is similar to dimple tool but the bead tool can only be used with tangent continuous sketches. Any sketch with sharp corners cannot create a bead.
  9. Mirror Feature: Mirror tool is used to create a copy of the selected feature and its parent sketch along an appropriate datum plane.
  10. Break corner: The break corner tool is used to remove sharp edges from the model. The edges can be blended (rounded) or chamfered. The dimensions of blend or chamfer can be modified locally.
  11. Normal Cut-out: The normal cut-out tool creates a cut in the sheet body based on the selected sketch or curve. The distance of cut can be adjusted manually.
  12. Mirror Body: Mirror body creates a copy of the selected body along a datum plane.
  13. Unite: this tool creates a single body from selected separate bodies. It helps merge the contours of adjacent bodies.

The below image shows all the tools used for creating the box assembly model.

Conclusion:

Thus following the above mentioned steps and using the described tools, the Box Assembly is modelled in Siemens NX.
