CASING DESIGN USING NX CAD

Objective: Design a casing using NX CAD. And make familiar with sheet metal workbench.

Introduction:

In NX-CAD sheet metal workbench is used to design sheet metal parts.

Sheet metals are metals with good malleability formed into thin metal pieces by some industrial process. And this we can make to different desired complex shapes using punch and die and some other metal trimming process. Sheet metals are used in automobiles, truck bodies, airplane, building roofing and many home appliance gadgets etc.

Design Methodology

Steps involved: Open a new file

Step 1: Making a base (or flat metal sheeth of thickness 1mm) using one rectangular sketch with defined sizes and Tab command to generate the solid-

Step 2: Making an cutout using one rectangular sketch and 'normal cutout' command-

Step 3: Bending the two edges of the metal sheet using Bend command. a line made at the two sides of the base defined by some distance from the edges and made 90 deg bend using bend command at the line position.

Step 3: Adding flanges with 5mm length and 90 deg bend using flange command-

Step 4: removing sharp corners or filleting the sharp edges using 'break corner' command

Step 5: unbending all the bends and making holes on the flanges using 'hole command'. using sketch defined some points where exact hole is needed, then using hole command made holes by giving input position as the points defined.

Step 6: making sketch for dimple

Commands used in sketch: Rectangle, Quick trim, Studio spline, move curve.

Step 7 : Making dimple with the above sketch

Step 8: Making bead with bead command, given input curve as a circle sketch made in the base plane.

Step 9 : Making mirror of the bead feature

Step 10 : Rebending to get back the desired shape.
