Sheet Metal Casing Design

Casing Design

Objective: Designing a Sheet Metal Casing using Siemens NX Sheet metal application.

Introduction: Sheet metal components are the parts formed by punching, stamping, cutting and bending. In this project we are going to understand the design procedure for Sheet metal casing using NX CAD. In this project we would get introduced to the Sheet metal application of the Siemens NX CAD software.

Methodology:

Features and Tools Used:

  • Direct Sketch: We use its tools to create a base sketch. (for eg: Rectangle, Circle, Line, etc.)
  • Basic Group: We extrude the base sketch using the TAB feature from the toolbar.
  • Cutout: Using the NORMAL CUTOUT tool we remove the material from the required location.
  • Bend: We provide flanges to the extruded tab using the FLANGE feature, from this toolbar.
  • Corner: After creating the flanges we eliminate the sharp corners using the CLOSED CORNER feature in order to ease the manufacturing process.
  • Punch:
  1. Lastly we make the holes using the HOLE command. Using MIRROR FEATURE tool we mirror the hole on th either sides of the component.
  2. Provide the necessary slot using the DIMPLE command.
  3. Also we create circular projections with help of the BEAD command.
  • Flat Pattern: We create a flattened view of the component using the FLAT PATTERN command.
  • Drafting:

We can create 2D drawing sheets in NX CAD from the solid component designed. For that we have to follow the process below:

Application >> Drafting >> Base View >> In model view to use - FLAT PATTERN created >> Adjust appropriate scale >> Drawing Sheet formed >> Give Proper Dimensions.

Conclusion:

We have sucessfully understood the basic tools of Siemens NX Sheet Metal Application and the procedure to design the Sheet metal Casing.
