PREDATOR YACHT

Aim and objective:

The objective is to design and assemble various parts of the yacht using Solidworks.

Introduction:

The yacht includes both part modelling and surface modelling.

The surface modelling is used up to 90% in the modelling of various parts of the yacht.

Parts to be modelled:

  • Propeller
  • Radar
  • Hull
  • Garage Door
  • Rear Seat
  • Front Seat
  • Middle Seat
  • Super Structure
  • Radar Mast

1. PROPELLER:

A propeller is a rotating fan-like structure that is used to propel the ship by using the power generated and transmitted by the main engine of the ship. ... A ship can be fitted with one, two and rarely three propellers depending upon the speed and manoeuvring requirements of the vessel.

Commands used in propeller:

  • Sketch
  • Revolve
  • Lofted Base
  • Cut Extrude
  • Fillet
  • Circular Pattern

Sketch:
The sketch is a 2D representation of a particular model from different views such as front view, side view, top view, etc.

Revolve:

Revolve is used to create a revolved 3D model using a sketch profile using an axis of rotation. The profile created with the revolution up to 3600 axis rotation.

Lofted Base:

Creates a 3D solid by specifying a series of cross-sections. The cross-sections define the shape of the resulting solid. You must specify at least two cross-sections. Loft cross-sections can be open or closed, planar or non-planar, and can also be edge sub-objects.

Extrude Cut:

The extrude cut is used to remove unwanted material from the solid model as per the sketch defined. Based on the sketch the material is removed from the component.

Fillet:

The fillet is used to creating round faces in the interior or exterior corners of the part. The fillet distributes stresses uniformly along the corners.

Circular Pattern:

A circular pattern is used to create a solid feature in a circular direction with respect to the reference axis of rotation up to user-defined instances.

2. RADAR:

Radar - Radio Detection and Ranging, is used to detect objects and their position relative to your current location. It works by sending out a radio signal. ... It does so by detecting other ships and land obstacles, to give bearing and distance for collision avoidance and navigation while on water.

Commands used in Radar:

  • Sketch
  • Boss Extrude
  • Fillet
  • Cut Extrude
  • Sketch Pattern
  • Mirror
  • Split line

Boss Extrude:

The extrude command is used to create a solid extrusion based on the selected sketch or contours. The extrusion made in either a positive or negative direction as required.

Mirror:

The mirror command is used to create a replica of the body, feature in the specific direction up to the user-defined number of instances.

Sketch Pattern:

The sketch pattern is used to create a similar sketch profile up to user-defined instances based on some reference edges, vertex, etc.,

Split Line:

The split line is used to project an entity i.e., sketch, solid, surface, face, plane or surface spline on to the surfaces or curved or planar surfaces. You can split curves on multiple bodies with one command.

3. SEAT:

These are used to provide human comfort, A ship seat is usually an upholstered armchair with a slightly inclined back.

Rear Seat:

The rear seat is built at the rear side of the yacht.

Commands used to create Rear Seat:

  • Sketch
  • Surface Sweep
  • Surface Offset
  • Surface Trim
  • Ruled Surface
  • Surface knit
  • Surface Extend
  • Surface Loft
  • Boss Extrude
  • Cut Extrude
  • Fillet
  • Chamfer
  • Mirror
  • Revolve

Surface Sweep:

Create a surface feature by sweeping an open or closed profile along an open or closed patch.

Surface Offset:

Creates offset surfaces using one or more contiguous faces.

Ruled Surface:

Rules surface is built up by creating a swept surface using selected edges as guide curves.

Kint Surface:

Connecting two or more adjacent non intersecting surfaces together.

Front Seat:

The front seat is created at the front side of the yacht

Commands used to Create Front Seat:

  • Sketch
  • Surface Sweep
  • Surface Offset
  • Surface Trim
  • Ruled Surface
  • Surface knit
  • Surface Extend
  • Surface Loft
  • Fillet
  • Chamfer
  • Mirror
  • Revolve
  • Dome

Middle Seat:

The middle seat is created at the centre of the yacht.

Commands used to create Middle Seat:

  • Sketch
  • Boss Extrude
  • Cut Extrude
  • Chamfer
  • Fillet
  • Mirror

4. HULL:

A hull is the watertight body of a ship or boat. The hull may open at the top (such as a dinghy), or it may be fully or partially covered with a deck. Atop the deck may be a deckhouse and other superstructures, such as a funnel, derrick, or mast. The line where the hull meets the water surface is called the waterline.

Commands used in Hull:

  • Sketch
  • Project Curve
  • Loft Surface
  • Fill Surface
  • Surface Extrude
  • Surface Trim
  • Surface Extend
  • Shell
  • Boss Extrude
  • Cut Extrude
  • Fillet
  • Chamfer
  • Sweep
  • Plane
  • Dome
  • Helix
  • Linear Pattern
  • Delete Face
  • Curve
  • Revolve
  • Combine

Project Curve:

The project curve is used to create a 3D curve is it is created by using the reference of two 2D curves in two different planes.

Fill Surface:

Creates a surface patch within the boundary defines by existing model edges, sketches or curves.

Surface Extrude:

Creates an extruded surface based on some reference sketches.

Surface Trim:

The surface trim is used to trim the surface where one surface interest with another surface, plane or sketch.

Surface Extend:

Extend the edge, multiple edges or face on a surface based on end condition.

Shell:

Shell is used to create a thickened surface either it can be done in the interior or exterior surface. The shell tool hollows out a part, leaves open the faces you select, and creates thin-walled features on the remaining faces. If you do not select any face on the model, you can shell a solid part, creating a closed, hollow model. You can also shell a model using multiple thicknesses.

Chamfer:

The chamfer is used to create bevelled features on the selected edge face and vertex according to angle or distance specified.

Sweep:

Sweep is used to create solid by sweeping a closed or open sketch profile in one plane along the closed or open path along the same or another plane.

Dome:

Dome is an architecture, the hemispherical structure evolved from the arch, usually forming a ceiling or roof over the surface/face being selected.

Helix/Spiral:

This command is used actually to create a spiral or helix based curve on some reference sketch.

Delete Face:

This command is used to delete unnecessary faces and this feature comes with options like delete face, delete and patch, delete and fill.

Combine:

A combine feature is used to merge two or more solids into a single solid.

5. GARAGE DOOR:

A garage door is a large door on a garage that opens either manually or automatically. The garage door is frequently large enough to accommodate automobiles and other vehicles. Doors are made of wood, metal or fibreglass, etc.,

Commands used in Grage Door:

  • Sketch
  • Cut Extrude
  • Fillet
  • Mirror

6. SUPERSTRUCTURE:

A superstructure is an extended construction of any building or platform that rises above the rest of the building or platform in a distinct manner. Thus, superstructure means to add construction to an already existing structure. In ships, this is the name given to the part of the ship that emerges from the deck.

Command used to create Super Structure:

  • Sketch
  • Surface Extrude
  • Ruled Surface
  • Surface Sweep
  • Knit Surface
  • Cut Extrude
  • Loft Surface
  • Extrude Thin
  • Chamfer
  • Fillet
  • Mirror
  • Combine
  • Sweep
  • Thicken Surface
  • Dome
  • Combine

7. RADAR MAST:

Radar mast is a modern ferry. Navigation mast supporting the ship radar at front the containers holding inflatable lifeboats on the side of an ocean. Radar and other instruments on the top of a ship.

The radar mast consists of a housing that accommodates all major radars, sensors, and antennas of a naval vessel. It will change the appearance of naval vessels.

Command used to create Radar Mast:

  • Sketch
  • Boss Extrude
  • Revolve Thin
  • Sweep
  • Dome
  • Shell
  • Fillet
  • Chamfer
  • Mirror

YACHT:

A yacht is a watercraft used for pleasure or sports. The term originates from the Dutch word yacht (which means "hunt"), and originally referenced light, fast sailing vessels that the Dutch republic navy used to pursue pirates and other transgressors around and into the shallow waters of the low countries.

Assembly of the YACHT:

All the modelled parts are inserted in the assembly

since the parts are created based on the reference with the deck surface the parts are automatically fixed above deck surface while the part is inserted in the assembly environment.

So to start the assembly of the yacht first part being inserted will be the hull which has the deck surface.

The propeller, radar and garage door are not fully fixed since they have to rotate and move respectively.

So far these parts the mates are manually defined to allow them to move in particular axis only.

Conclusion:

Thus the various parts of the yacht are modelled and assembled together using Solidworks.

The outcome of course:

Proper use of various surface modelling tools in the surface modelling environment.

Learned hoe to surface model a part and assemble its various parts with reference to some surfaces.
