Skill-Lync

Biomechanical engineering is an interdisciplinary subject that applies mechanical engineering principles into biological systems. Since biological systems are more complex than mechanical systems, it often requires more advanced analytical techniques. If you are a mechanical engineering student interested in biomechanics or biomechanical engineering, here are a few universities in Europe that offer biomechanical engineering as a specialized course or a core subject in a generalized course.

Brunel University London

Courses available:

Biomedical, Biomechanics and Bioelectronics Engineering MSc

Biomedical Genetics and Tissue Engineering MSc

These courses at Brunel University London aim to train graduates into qualified biomedical engineers who can develop and perform extensive biomedical research in the healthcare and medical industry. The biomedical sciences team for the university has won the Teaching Excellence award from the Higher education Academy in light of its innovative and personalized teaching methods. The university is largely focusing on smart micro-devices and systems with compatible technology that can be applied to the human body. Research at Brunel is divided into three main areas: devices, modeling, and assistive technology.  Several scientific laboratories are dedicated for that purpose:

  • Molecular laboratory
  • Tissue culture laboratory
  • Microscope laboratory
  • Fly laboratory
  • QPCR

University of Nottingham

Courses available:

MSc Bioengineering

MSc Bioengineering: Biomaterials and Biomechanics

This multidisciplinary course covers the practical and theoretical aspects of bioengineering. It has a wide scope which allows the graduates to specialize in areas related to biomaterials, biomechanics, and digital modelling. The courses are designed to prepare students for a career in industrial, clinical, or research area. The University of Nottingham has a high employment rate among its postgraduates. In 2016, 94.9% of the postgraduates have secured employment or further study opportunities within 6 months of graduation. The Bioengineering research group at the University aims to solve biological and clinical problems through multi-scale characterization and engineering modelling techniques. The laboratories dedicated to bioengineering research are:

  • Biomechanics Laboratory
  • Human Tissues Authority licensed storage facility

Delft University

Courses:

BioMechanical Design (MSc Mechanical engineering)

MSc Biomedical Engineering

At TU Delft, graduates learn to develop conceptual models from a technical angle. The courses provide an in-depth understanding of biology, medical theory, and technical areas such as mechanical engineering, physics, etc. The Biomechanical research department at TU Delft employs mechanical engineering techniques to analyse the interaction between biological and technical systems. Some of the research institutes and laboratories at TU Delft that work towards this research technique are:

Trinity College Dublin

Course offered: MSc Bioengineering

This course is designed to equip the learners with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to research and work in the clinical industry. The curriculum at Trinity College Dublin covers a variety of biomedical engineering subjects. The research at the university on the subject of bioengineering is focused on four different areas. Each of the research areas has its own set of labs led by experts who work on various bioengineering research projects:

Technical University of Munich

Course offered: MSc Medical Technology and Engineering

This course aims to train professionals with extensive and updated knowledge that covers the spectrum of technology and engineering science. Students are taught with tailored focus points that will help them to apply their procured knowledge in research and develop medical systems and technology. The Munich School of BioEngineering works on research projects on the following areas:
