The Importance of Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS)

Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) are an essential safety feature in modern vehicles, designed to alert drivers when tyre pressure falls below the recommended level. Maintaining proper tyre pressure is crucial for vehicle performance, fuel efficiency, and overall safety. This article delves into the mechanics behind TPMS, their benefits, types, and the technology that powers them. 


What is TPMS? 

TPMS is a system that continuously monitors the air pressure inside pneumatic tyres and provides real-time information to the driver. The primary function of TPMS is to prevent accidents caused by under-inflated tyres, which can lead to tyre blowouts, reduced handling, and increased braking distances. 


Types of TPMS 

There are two main types of TPMS: Direct TPMS and Indirect TPMS. 

Direct TPMS 

Direct TPMS uses pressure sensors mounted inside each tyre to measure the actual air pressure. These sensors transmit data to the vehicle's onboard computer, which then alerts the driver if any tyre pressure is below the recommended level. Direct TPMS provides accurate and real-time pressure readings for each tyre. 


Indirect TPMS 

Indirect TPMS, on the other hand, does not measure tyre pressure directly. Instead, it uses the vehicle's Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) sensors to monitor wheel speed. If a tyre is under-inflated, its circumference decreases, causing it to rotate faster than properly inflated tyres. The system detects this difference in wheel speed and triggers an alert. Indirect TPMS is generally less accurate than direct TPMS but is often more cost-effective. 


Benefits of TPMS 

  • Improved Safety: By providing early warnings of under-inflated tyres, TPMS helps prevent accidents caused by tyre blowouts and poor vehicle handling. 
  • Enhanced Fuel Efficiency: Properly inflated tyres reduce rolling resistance, leading to better fuel economy and reduced carbon emissions. 
  • Extended Tyre Life: Maintaining optimal tyre pressure helps reduce uneven tyre wear, extending the lifespan of the tyres and saving on replacement costs. 
  • Environmental Impact: Properly inflated tyres contribute to lower fuel consumption and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, making TPMS an eco-friendly feature. 


How TPMS Works 

  • Sensors: In direct TPMS, pressure sensors are installed inside each tyre. These sensors measure the air pressure and temperature and transmit this data wirelessly to the vehicle's onboard computer. 
  • Onboard Computer: The onboard computer processes the data received from the sensors and compares it to the recommended tyre pressure levels. If the pressure in any tyre is below the threshold, the computer triggers a warning light on the dashboard. 
  • Dashboard Alert: The driver is alerted via a warning light or a message on the dashboard, indicating which tyre is under-inflated and often providing the current pressure reading. 


Maintenance and Calibration 

Regular maintenance of the TPMS is essential to ensure its proper functioning. This includes checking the sensors' batteries, recalibrating the system after tyre rotations or replacements, and ensuring that the sensors are not damaged.
