The Foundations of CFD: Principles and Workflow

Before diving into simulations, it’s essential to understand the foundational principles of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This blog provides an overview of the governing equations, numerical methods, and the step-by-step workflow involved in a CFD analysis. 


Governing Principles of CFD 

CFD is governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, which represent the conservation of mass, momentum, and energy in fluid flows. These second-order nonlinear partial differential equations are discretized using numerical methods such as: 

  • Finite Volume Method: Popular in most CFD analysis software, this method converts differential equations into algebraic equations. 
  • Finite Element Method: Useful for solving structural and flow problems. 
  • Finite Difference Method: A straightforward approach for simpler geometries. 


CFD Simulation Workflow 

Pre-Processing: 

  • Clean up CAD models and extract the fluid domain. 
  • Generate surface and volume meshes for accurate results. 


Solver Configuration: 

  • Set turbulence models, boundary conditions, and convergence criteria. 
  • Use CFD tools for mechanical engineers to configure simulation parameters. 


Simulation Execution: 

  • Solve the equations iteratively to compute flow parameters like velocity, pressure, and temperature. 


Post-Processing: 

  • Analyze results to identify design improvements and optimize performance.
