Importing Data from Excel for Simscape Simulations in Simscape

Skill-Lync

Continuing with our Physical Modeling in Simscape with Simulink & MATLAB blog series, today we explore how to import external data into Simulink using Excel spreadsheets. This technique simplifies parameter input and enables seamless integration of experimental datasets into Simscape models.

This blog is part of Skill-Lync’s Full Course on Simscape, which teaches Simscape modeling for engineers through real-world applications.

Importing Data from Excel into Simulink

Using Simulink’s "From Spreadsheet" block, we can read external data files and use them in simulations. The steps include:

Creating an Excel File:

  • Define Time (s) in the first column.
  • Enter corresponding parameter values in the next columns.

Configuring the "From Spreadsheet" Block:

  • Specify the file name (e.g., data.xlsx).
  • Adjust interpolation and extrapolation settings.
  • Ensure "First column as time" is enabled.

Connecting the Block to Simulink:

  • Link the imported data to simulation parameters.
  • Use Simscape physical modeling tutorial techniques to integrate data into models.

Visualizing Imported Data in Simulink

Run the Simulation:

  • Set the simulation time based on data duration.
  • Observe real-time parameter variations.

Logging Data to the Workspace:

  • Enable Data Logging in Simulink properties.
  • Store Scope outputs as workspace variables.

Exporting Data from Simulink to Excel:

  • Copy simulation results and paste them into an Excel file for further analysis.

Conclusion

By integrating Excel spreadsheets with Simulink, engineers can efficiently import real-world data into Simscape models. In the next blog, we will explore control logic implementation using MATLAB Stateflow.
