Optimization in 3D Contact Modeling with MotionView and MotionSolve

logo

Skill-Lync

Welcome to the Multibody Dynamics for Automotive Applications using MotionView and MotionSolve blog series. This final blog in the 3D contact modeling series will cover best practices, troubleshooting tips, and optimization techniques for automotive dynamics simulation.

Key Best Practices for 3D Contact Modeling

1. Use Controlled Mesh Coarseness

  • Set mesh coarseness to 5 or 6 in MotionView training courses.
  • Fine meshes improve accuracy but increase computation time.

2. Verify Normal Directions

  • Use the Highlight Contact Side option in MotionView software.
  • Ensure element normals are correctly aligned.

3. Optimize Contact Stiffness

  • Avoid overly stiff penalties, which may cause instability.
  • Experiment with penetration depth to fine-tune models.

4. Test the Model Before Adding Contacts

  • Run the simulation without contacts to check for errors.
  • Gradually add complexity with contacts and friction.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Issue: Bodies Pass Through Each Other

  • Reduce maximum step size in simulation settings.
  • Increase contact stiffness to limit penetration.

Issue: Integration Failures

  • Activate contacts one by one to isolate problems.
  • Fine-tune mesh resolution in hypermesh.

Issue: Contact Forces Too Weak

  • Adjust contact damping to improve stability.
  • Check element normals to ensure proper contact.

Performance Optimization in MotionView

Use parallel processing to speed up contact calculations.

Adjust simulation step size for faster convergence.

Enable "Find Precise Contact Event" for better accuracy.

Conclusion

Mastering 3D contact modeling in multibody dynamics software requires attention to detail and careful tuning of simulation parameters. By following best practices, troubleshooting efficiently, and optimizing performance, engineers can build accurate, stable automotive simulation tools.
