As a design engineer, your dream job would be to work for massive automotive companies such as BMW or Renault Nissan and many more. But you mostly hear nowadays that such big companies are only hiring students from IIT and NIT, or you need more than 9.0 CGPA to work with such giants.
However, the reality is, companies don't judge an engineer by their college or percentage. What they care about is whether you have a firm grip on the fundamentals in your respective field.
Continue reading this blog to discover the roles and employment opportunities in the design domain and what you can do to enter this field.
Many people assume that knowing how to use a 3D software or tool like SolidWorks or Ansys can help them land a job in the design industry. But in the real world, simply knowing about software is not going to help a lot.
When a company plans to hire you, they are investing in you so that you can give them a good return through your work. So, they will hire you depending on your understanding of engineering basics so that they can quickly train you to work for them.
Moreover, we see engineers who are stable in their theoretical knowledge but are lacking in their practical experience. They only can narrate their books, but when it comes to approaching a design with the engineering fundamentals, they mostly fail. Hence, you have to thoroughly understand your field and its relevance in the real world.
A design engineer sounds like a fancy profession where you can wear a casual outfit and not the regular production team uniform, and you sit in your desk working on a software and have your salary in your account. However, a person working in this field should also know the production processes to collaborate easily with the production team since they will make a product based on your design.
The design engineering and production engineering fields are interconnected. And the experience of working as a production engineer proves helpful when you wish to switch to the position of a design engineer.
A design engineer doesn't just create an attractive design but also makes it more safe, efficient, and functional. Hence, being a design engineer means you must understand everything related to it.
BIW (Body in White) is a stage in automotive design that refers to the body shell design of the car. BIW includes hood, fender, roof, tailgate, floor, etc. BIW does not include the doors, engines, chassis, or any other moving parts.
Designing a car requires various teams; BIW is just one of them. People usually think that for designing a car, only 1 or 2 engineers are enough. But, to give you an idea, only the BIW components alone need more than 250 working on it.
To understand the various teams that work on car design, let's look at the range of components in the vehicle.
Talking about the door alone, we can see sheet metal in the outer parts, and plastic on the inside. There is the glass that goes inside and out of the door, and then the door handle and switches for different functions. There is a roof that provides safety as well as thermal isolation. Plus, there is the lighting and wiring harness (Electrical activity design).
All of these works require separate teams. Also, the tires and wheels, chassis components, seats, engines, windshields, body modules (hinges, rubber, sealants), and insulations require separate teams, and these teams work on a single car at a time. The designing phase of one car takes about three years.
The direction in which the tool usually approaches the sheet metal to get the desired shape according to the design is known as the draw direction. You need to indicate the direction of drawing to generate a specific shape to help the production department.
The production engineers are responsible for deciding the draw direction and designing the required tools for the job. The production engineers design the jigs, fixtures, molds, and tools. Hence, as a design engineer, you are also responsible for making the work more efficient on the production floor.
Skill-Lync understands the design domain and its employment opportunities. It offers industry-relevant Post graduate courses in various fields, from automotive passenger car design to production. Skill-Lync helps you to learn how to make real-life objects, understand the different production processes, and work on various design tools to accomplish specific design tasks.
In the design engineer PG Certfication courses, you will learn about plastic design, structural analysis, GD&T, sheet design. You get the opportunity to apply these fundamentals when designing your own components for standard designs and models. You will also have in-depth knowledge about every single component, force distribution, and various other essential aspects.
Hence, Skill-Lync becomes a course that can significantly increase your industry-relevant skills.
You may not realize the fundamentals of the items that you are designing, which can be especially challenging as a fresher in the industry. A design engineer has to be aware of the different processes, the parameters that affect the efficiency and must also consider safety in design considerations. Moreover, you also need to create a fresh design that is functional, safe, and appealing to people.
Interviewers want people who know the subject matter, have an interest in the field, show the design from multiple views, and also realize the inner working of their design. As a design engineer, you need to have a robust portfolio, which Skill-Lync will help you build as you work on your projects and learn in the process. Skill-Lync also has a job assistance program with top contacts in the industry to help you through the process.
Every design engineer must have excellent theoretical and practical knowledge besides knowing designing software. You need to know about the analysis of these processes and possess the experience in designing them.
Now is the perfect time to build essential skills for jobs, learn something new, and expand your knowledge. If you are a fresher who's serious about working in the design domain, browse through the design Post graduation courses from Skill-Lync today.
