Quick Setup and Saving Files in AutoCAD

Quick Setup: Getting Started Efficiently 

The quick setup in AutoCAD provides a simplified way to configure your workspace compared to the advanced setup. Here's how it works: 

Setting Units: 

• Start by selecting the appropriate unit system. For civil engineers, the engineering unit system is commonly used, where measurements are in feet and inches. 

Defining Screen Area: 

• The quick setup asks you to specify the drawing area. For example, you might set the width as 1 ft 12 in and the length as 9 in. 

Completing the Setup: 

• Once these basic parameters are set, you're ready to begin drafting. This streamlined approach saves time, especially for simpler projects in AutoCAD for civil engineering. 

Saving Your AutoCAD Drawing Files 

In AutoCAD, drawings are saved with the DWG file extension. Let’s explore the various ways to save your files: 

1. First-Time Save: 

a. Use the Save As option to define the file name and location: 

• Access it via the Application Menu or Quick Access Toolbar. 
• Alternatively, type SAVEAS in the Command Line.
• Example: Save a file as "Week1_Example4" in your project folder. 

2. Regular Saves: 

a. Use the Save command to update your existing file. Options include: 

• Application Menu > Save. 
• Quick Access Toolbar > Save.
• Typing SAVE or QSAVE for quick saves. 

b. Note: Quick Save doesn’t open a dialog box, saving changes instantly. 

3. Closing Files: 

a. Close individual files via the Application Menu or using the "X" button. 

b. For multiple files, use Close All to return to the default AutoCAD screen. 

Partial File Opening 

When dealing with large files, AutoCAD allows you to partially open specific layers or views: 

• Open the file using the Partial Open option. 
• Select the desired view or geometry, such as reinforcement details in a drawing. 
• Load only the necessary layers, optimizing performance for AutoCAD Civil 3D or other complex files.
