Welcome back to AutoCAD Essentials for Civil Engineers blog series. AutoCAD grips are an essential tool for precise drafting and editing in AutoCAD for civil engineering. This blog will explore the fundamentals of grips, their states, and how they simplify editing tasks. Whether you’re a beginner or pursuing an AutoCAD for civil engineering full course, understanding grips will elevate your drafting skills.
What Are Grips in AutoCAD?
Grips are small, interactive points displayed when an object is selected in AutoCAD. These points allow users to manipulate objects quickly and efficiently, saving time during the drafting process. Grips are indispensable for professionals working with CAD software for civil engineers.
In architectural drafting, grips are often seen on walls, doors, and other entities. For instance, selecting a wall line reveals three grips: one at each endpoint and one at the midpoint. Similarly, selecting an arc displays four grips—two at the endpoints, one at the midpoint, and one at the center.
Types of Grips
Grips in AutoCAD have three states:
Customizing Grip Settings
AutoCAD allows customization of grip colors and sizes to enhance visibility:
For example, you can set unselected grips to cyan, hover grips to yellow, and selected grips to blue, improving their visibility in complex civil CAD programs.
Grips and Block Objects
When working with block objects, grips can be customized further using the GripBlock command:
This feature is invaluable for creating detailed cad civil drawings in AutoCAD 2024.
Practical Applications of Grips
Grips streamline numerous tasks, including:
