Efficient Dimensioning Techniques in AutoCAD – From Ordinate to Break Dimensions

logo

Skill-Lync

Welcome back to AutoCAD Essentials for Civil Engineers blog series. In AutoCAD for Civil Engineering, efficient dimensioning ensures your drawings are accurate, clean, and well-organized. This blog explores Ordinate Dimensions, Baseline Dimensions, Break Dimensions, and practical tips to improve workflow. Whether you’re new to AutoCAD civil basics or taking an AutoCAD online course, these techniques will help you create professional-grade drawings.

Ordinate Dimensions: Perfect for Surveying

The Ordinate Dimension tool displays the X and Y coordinates of any point relative to the origin (0,0). This is essential in civil drafting and surveying for locating benchmarks, center points, or key structures.

To use DIMORDINATE:

  • Specify the feature location (point).
  • Choose the XDATUM (X-coordinate) or YDATUM (Y-coordinate).
  • Place the dimension.

Example: Surveying Layout

A point located at 1,4 can be dimensioned as:

  • X Coordinate = 1
  • Y Coordinate = 4

This is particularly useful for site layouts, where TBM (The Benchmark) is the reference point.

Continued and Baseline Dimensions

Efficient dimensioning requires clarity, especially when measuring multiple entities like walls, doors, or panels.

  • Continued Dimensioning
  • Adds dimensions in a chain from a single reference line.
  • Example: Dimensions for door panels of 3 ft each.

Baseline Dimensioning

  • Dimensions are taken from a common base point.
  • Ensures all measurements align perfectly from one reference.

Using these tools improves coordination in CAD civil drawings and ensures no detail is missed.

Break Dimensions: Enhancing Visibility

In tightly packed drawings, dimension lines may overlap, causing clutter. The Break Dimension tool removes intersecting segments for improved clarity.

How to Use DIMBREAK:

  • Select the dimension line.
  • Choose the interfering object or line.
  • Breaks are applied automatically.

Multiple Break Example

  • For dimensions of 8 units, 4 units, and a crossing line, use the Multiple option to break all intersections simultaneously.

This is invaluable in AutoCAD essentials when drafting plans with limited space, ensuring CAD software for civil engineers produces clean, coordinated drawings.

Practical Application in Civil Drafting

Let’s say you are working on a site plan:

1. Benchmark (TBM): Place at 0,0.

2. Locate circular columns with Dim Ordinate:

  • X Coordinate: 12 units.
  • Y Coordinate: 6 units.

3. Add linear dimensions for walls, windows, and doors using DIMLINEAR.

These techniques ensure the layout is readable and professionally organized.

Conclusion

Efficient dimensioning using tools like Ordinate, Continued, Baseline, and Break Dimensions is critical for precise and clear documentation in AutoCAD for civil engineering. Whether you're learning through an AutoCAD online course with certification or working on a civil engineering class, these tools save time and ensure accuracy.
