Challenge

Wiring harness design in CATIA V5 - 3D modeling Week 2 Challenge

AIM : Download following connectors & Connector clip cad data from given link & define it as Electrical Connector using Electrical Part design Workbench. Define all the necessary properties to Connectors & Clip.

1. Deutsch DT06 – 08SA ( https://www.te.com/usa-en/product-DT06-08SA.html)

2. Tyco 174357-2 (https://www.te.com/usa-en/product-2-174357-2.html?source=header-match)\

3. Tyco 85229-1 – (https://www.te.com/usa-en/product-85229-1.html?q=85229&source=header)

OBJECTIVES :

  • Defining the parts electrically and further creating catalogue for the components.

INTRODUCTION : A wiring harness is an organised set of wires, terminals & connectors that run throughout the entire vehicle and transmit information and electric power, thereby playing a critical role in “connecting” a variety of components.

In this challenge we will be working on downloading the files form the te.com website and then defining the parts electrically and further creating a catalogue for the components.

CONNECTOR DEFINITION :

Following parameters are required to define any connector -

  • Geometry Parameters - Points & Co-ordinate system (Axis)
  • Connector connection points - This point is used for the connection of one connector to another connector.
  • Harness bundle entry point - This point defines where the harness bundle segment point will end when routed to the electrical connector.
  • Cavity connection point (Optional) - This point is used to define the connection of a connector to a connector clip. This only applies to connectors which have the mounting feature for a connector clip.

CONNECTOR DEFINITIONS IN CATIA V5 :

1. Deutsch DT06-08SA :

Connector Mating Side :

  • Create midpoint on the contact face of mating side of Connector in Mechanical Part Design workbench.
  • Creat an axis system on this point with direction defined as shown in below image.

Wire Bundle Entry Side :

  • Create midpoint on the contact face of wire bundle entry side as per the image.

Define as "CONNECTOR" :

  • Choose "Electrical Part Design" workbench.
  • Define the part as CONNECTOR with the help of Define Connector command  in this workbench & give Type, Part Number and No. of terminals as 8 according to image.

Define Connector Connection Point :

  • Select the Define Connector Connection Point command .
  • Put all the inputs as shown in below image.

Define Bundle Connection Point :

  • Select the Define Bundle Connection Point command .
  • Put all the inputs as shown in below image.

2. Tyco 174357-2 :

Connector Mating Side :

  • Create midpoint on the contact face of mating side of Connector in Mechanical Part Design workbench.
  • Creat an axis system on this point with direction defined as shown in below image.

Wire Bundle Entry Side :

  • Create midpoint on the contact face of wire bundle entry side as per the image.

Clip Locking Side :

  • Create midpoint on the contact face of clip locking side as per the image.
  • Creat an axis system on this point with direction defined as shown in below image.

Define as "CONNECTOR" :

  • Choose "Electrical Part Design" workbench.
  • Define the part as CONNECTOR with the help of Define Connector command  in this workbench & give Type, Part Number and No. of terminals as 3 according to image.

Define Connector Connection Point :

  • Select the Define Connector Connection Point command .
  • Put all the inputs as shown in below image.

Define Bundle Connection Point :

  • Select the Define Bundle Connection Point command .
  • Put all the inputs as shown in below image.

Define Cavity Connection Point :

  • Select the Define Cavity Connection Point command .
  • Put all the inputs as shown in below image.

3. Tyco 85229-1 :

Connector Clip Mating Side :

  • Create midpoint on the contact face of mating side of Connector Clip in Mechanical Part Design workbench.
  • Creat an axis system on this point with direction defined as shown in below image.

Define Cavity Connection Point :

  • Select the Define Cavity Connection Point command .
  • Put all the inputs as shown in below image.

 CATALOG CREATION :

  • Click on File .
  • Then click on New .
  • Select CatalogDocument then click Ok
  • Click on Add Family command .
  • Enter name of the component family .
  • Then select the component type as 'Electrical' .
  • Then save the catalog.

For this challenge we create two Catalog as "CONNECTOR" & "CONNECTOR CLIP".

CREATION OF CONNECTOR & CLIP ASSEMBLY :

  • Go to Electrical Assembly Design workbench.
  • Import CONNECTOR & CONNECTOR CLIP to a new assembly file.
  • Arrange both parts as per required orientation.
  • Use Connect Electrical Devices command .
  • First chosse Clip & then Connector.
  • Both will automatically connected as per given constraints.

CONCLUSION : I have learned about how to define connectors & clips as Electrical Parts as well as I have also learned about how to define assembly as Electrical Component.
