Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge
Objective:
To perform both tension and torsion test on a given specimen. For the tension test the specimen would be displaced for 18mm while for the torsion test the specimen will be displaced to an angle of 1200 degree. We need total deformation, Equivalent stress and temeperature of the specimen.
Setup:
Since we are not adding any new materials we directly import the model into the geometry and open in spaceclaim. Once opened and checked for any abnormalities we load the model in the mechanical module. After loading in the mechanical module we rename the part as specimen. Then going into mesh we add a patch conforming method selecting the whole body and then selecting tetrahedrons. After that we make two new coordinate system in the cylindrical region and we give those new coorodinate as the center of sphere for a new mesh sizing by giving a radius of 22mm and a mesh size of 2mm. For the torsion test another new cylindical type coordinate system is created at its center. And a sphere of influence with global coordinate system as center and radius 8mm with mesh size 1mm is given to the center section of the specimen (only for torsion test). Moving onto analysis settings we give end time as 1e-3, then give a fixed support to one of the cylindrical surface and top part in one side and a displacement on the other. For the case of torsion we need to make sure to select the coordinate system there. For tension test give a value of 18mm in x direction as for torsion test give a value of 1200 degrees to y direction and both other components as 0. After that give select Total Deformation, Equivalent Stress, Equivalent strain and temperature from the worksheet.
Case 1 (Tension Test):
Total Deformation:

The maximum amount of deformation that was caused was 18.182mm.
Equivalent Stress:

The maximum amount of stress was developed at the elongating section which was at 93218 MPa.
Equivalent Strain:

The maximum amount of strain was also caused on elongation which was at 0.49376 mm/mm.
Temperature:

THe maximum amount of temperature produced was 114.6 Degree Celsius which occured at the point of elongation.
Case 2 (Torsion Test):
Total Defromation:

The maximum amount of total deformation is at 6.7376 mm.4
Equivalent Stress:

THe maximum amount of equivalent stress is produced at the center which is 47470 MPa
Equivalent Strain:

The maximum amount of equivalent strain is 0.51607 mm/mm
Temperature:

The maximum amount of temperature that was produced was at 7437.5 degree celsius.
Conclusion:
Both test are totally different and produce results accordingly. the tension test produces more deformationthan tosion test as expected. The torsion test produced higher temperature than the tension test specimen. Lathough the tension test produced more stress than in tosion test it was the torsion test that produced higher strain than tension test.
