Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge
Objective: To perform the tension and torsion tests on a specimen using the explicit dynamics analysis system of ANSYS Workbench.
Tension Test
Procedure:
- Coordinate Systems:

- Meshing:

- Boundary Conditions:

Analysis:
- Total Deformation:

- Equivalent Stress:

- Temperature:

Result:
| Total Deformation (mm) | Equivalent Stress (MPa) | Temperature (°C) | |||
| Maximum | Minimum | Maximum | Minimum | Maximum | Minimum |
| 18.004 | 0 | 587.88 | 0 | 255.07 | 22 |
Torsion Test
Procedure:
- Coordinate Systems:

- Meshing:

- Boundary Conditions:

Analysis:
- Total Deformation:

- Equivalent Stress:

- Temperature:

Result:
| Total Deformation (mm) | Equivalent Stress (MPa) | Temperature (°C) | |||
| Maximum | Minimum | Maximum | Minimum | Maximum | Minimum |
| 18.667 | 0 | 551.31 | 0 | 421.43 | 22 |
Overall Conclusion: The total deformation and the temperature are greater in the torsion test than in the tension test. The equivalent stress is however greater in the tension test than in the torsion test. From the simulation, it is evident that the specimen undergoes failure roughly at its centre in the torsion test. In the tension test, significant necking occurs near the centre of the specimen.
