Week 1 Spur Gear Challenge
Objective: To simulate the total deformation, equivalent stress and stress intensity in a system of spur gears made of
- Cast Iron
- Cast Bronze
- Cast Steel
Procedure:
- Meshing (Default):

- Boundary Conditions:

Analysis:
- Case 1 (Cast Iron)
- Total Deformation:

- Equivalent Stress:

- Stress Intensity:

- Total Deformation:
- Case 2 (Cast Bronze)
- Total Deformation:

- Equivalent Stress:

- Stress Intensity:

- Total Deformation:
- Case 3 (Cast Steel)
- Total Deformation:

- Equivalent Stress:

- Stress Intensity:

- Total Deformation:
Result:
| Cases | Total Deformation (m) | Equivalent Stress (Pa) | Stress Intensity (Pa) | |||
| Maximum | Minimum | Maximum | Minimum | Maximum | Minimum | |
| Case 1 | 0.03 | 0.0185 | 3.1566×10^8 | 58.177 | 3.462×10^8 | 64.55 |
| Case 2 | 0.03 | 0.0185 | 3.1912×10^8 | 136.19 | 3.5673×10^8 | 150.22 |
| Case 3 | 0.03 | 0.0185 | 3.1078×10^8 | 141.64 | 3.4423×10^8 | 157.53 |
Conclusion:
From equivalent stress and stress intensity data, cast steel should be used for the gears because the maximum equivalent stress and the maximum stress intensity are both least in case of cast steel. So, chances of failure would also be lesser. The location of highest stress intensity is the most probable location of fracture.
