Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

Tension and Torsion test using Explicit dynamics in ANSYS WORKBENCH.

Objective:

To perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen provided.

For the tension test, displace one end of the specimen to 18mm while keeping the other fixed.

For the torsion test, displace one end of the specimen to an angle of 1200 degree.

Aim is to find results for total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen .

Geometry:

Material:

Mesh:

for tensile test;

no of nodes:835

no of elements:3147

for torsion test;

no of nodes:1922

no of elements:8231

Bounndary Conditions:

For Tensile test;

For tensile test the speciman is fixed at faces B as shown in above image and a displacement of 18mm is provided on A end of the speciman in the positive direction of X-axis.

For Torsion Test;

an angular displacement of 1200 degree is provided to face A in the direction cylindrical Y-axis and the speciman is fixed at face B.

Analysis Settings:

The end time is kept to be 1.e-003

Results:

Tensile Test;

Total deformation:

Equivalent stress:

Temperature:

For Torsion Test;

Total deformation:

Equivalent stress:

Temperature:

Conclusion:

tabular representation for both the tests is displayed below;

Analysis Tension Test Torsion Test
Max Total deformation 18.001mm 13.814mm
Max Equivalent stress 545.14 MPa 569.12 MPa
Max Temperature 275.14 degree C 425.32 degree C
  • From the above results, we can conclude that the failure of the specimen in Tension Test is due to permanent
    deformation due to elongation and sue to neck generation. This concludes that failure of the Specimen is due
    to max Tensile Stress.
  • Failure of the Specimen in the Torsion Test shows, the flat failure surface. This concludes that failure is due to
    Max. Shear Stress. Also it is ductile material, which indicates the failure in the Plane of maximum sheer stress
    perpendicular to the axis of the Specimen.
  • Also we can see that Temperature in Torsion Test is very high due to high sheer stress.
