Week 9 - Project 1 - Door Applique Design with Engineering Features

HEAT STACKS AND LOCATOR ON DOOR APPLIQUE

LOCATOR

  • Locator is a part that is used to arrest the degrees of freedom for a part
  • The locator can be of any shape if until it satisfies the requirement
  • The locators used in this exercise are 4-way and 2-way locators
  • 4-way lacators are used to arrest the x and z axis moment and rotation
  • The 2-way locator is used to arrest the y axis rotation
  • The locator is created by creating a positioned sketch
  • Then, the sketch of the locator is drawn and then it is thickened using pad command
  • A thickness of 1.3mm is given to it
  • A draft angle is given with respect to the tooling axis (0.5°)
  • It is given an entry chamfer of 3 mm and filletted
  • Now, the second 4-way locator is recreated by copying the first locator and pasting it with the link
  • And then it is trasnlated to the other end of our convenience
  • The 2-way locator is created in the same way

HEAT STACKING

  • Heat stack are points that help in arresting only a certain degree of freedom
  • In this case, it is used to arrest the Y-Axis movement
  • They are small cylinder like protrusion that are pressed to lock the parts together
  • This is similar to rivetting process used for metals
  • First, the boundry is extracted on both ends of the part
  • Then multiple points are placed for the number of stacks placed
  • A posotioned sketch is created on the point and the drawings are done
  • It is then thickened using pad command and trimmed to the Door applique
  • The remaning stacks are copied and pasted and then trasnlated to the corresponding points created
  • The necessary holes are created on the door panel for the locators and stacks to come out
