Week 9 - Project 1 - Door Applique Design with Engineering Features
Given A surface

an intersection along the midplane is created.

Two lines are drawn on the intersection

A bisecting line between these two lines is created which forms the tooling axis of the component.

Class B surface

Using the class A surface, class C surface is created

All the three surfaces are trimmed together to form a thickened component.

The component is converted into a solid.

Creation of Locators and heat stakes
In manufacturing products with thermoplastics components, it is often necessary to join a thermoplastic to part of dissimilar material, whether it be a metal, a dissimilar plastic or other material.
Thermal staking is an assembly method that uses the controlled melting and forming of a plastic stud or boss to capture or lock another plastic or metal component of an assembly in place.
The progressive melting of plastic under continous pressure forms the head. When staking, right combination if heat and pressure for the application is critical.
Advantages
- Simplification of machinary
- Cost reduction
- Allows high density welds
- Multiple fastening joints.
Locators
These are used for fastening and locating the points of fastenening.

The cylindrical projections in the image below are the heat stakes.

Draft Analysis
The min. draft analysis is 3 degrees.
