Challenge

Week 9 Machining with Planer Challenge

AIM:

  • To perform explicit dynamic analysis for machining with planar and to find equivalent stress and total deformation.
  • To find the temperature of the body by using user-defined results.

PROCEDURE:

  • Drop an explicit dynamic analysis system and rename it.

  • Add steel 1006 explicit material to perform the simulation.

  • Import geometry by browsing to the file location.

  • Open geometry using SpaceClaim to check the geometric abnormalities.

  • Close Spaceclaim and open ansys mechanical to set up the simulation.
  • Assign Steel 1006 to the workpiece and change the behavior of the tool to rigid.

  • Delete the contacts in the model.
  • Under mesh insert the method and using body filter apply tool and change method to tetrahedrons.

  • Insert the sizing for the workpiece using the edge filter select all the four edges of the workpiece and change the type to the number of divisions and insert the number of divisions as 10.

  • Generate the mesh.

  • The above graph represents mesh metric which gives a clear idea of element quality and type of elements used for the simulation.
  • Under analysis, settings change the end time to 7e-4.

  • Insert fixed support for the workpiece.
  • For case-1 insert the tool velocity in x-component as 20000 mm/s and make the y and z components as 0.

  • List the outputs required and simulate the model for results.
  • For case-2 setup repeat the same procedure as case-1 and insert the tool velocity as 15000 mm/s and simulate the model for results.
  • To find temperature insert user-defined result and find the expression used to find the temperature and give the expression in the user-defined expression tab. To find temperature "TEMPERATUREALL" is the expression.

RESULTS:

CASE-1:

TOTAL DEFORMATION:

EQUIVALENT STRESS:

TEMPERATURE OF THE BODY:

CASE-2:

TOTAL DEFORMATION:

EQUIVALENT STRESS:

TEMPERATURE OF THE BODY:

CONCLUSIONS:

  • Explicit dynamic analysis of machining operation is performed successfully.
  • The equivalent stress, total deformation, and temperature of the body in both cases are obatined.
  • The stress and temperature in case-2 are less compared to case-1 as in case-2 the velocity of the tool is decreased.
