Challenge

Week 9 Machining with Planer Challenge

Objective: To perform an explicit dynamics simulation of a planar machining process and to find out the Equivalent Stress, Total Deformation and a User defined result to calculate the temperature of the specimen. The Simulation is done for 2 different cases of Velocity.

CASE 1: 20000 mm/s

CASE 2: 15000 mm/s

1. Geometry:

2. Material:

3. Case Setup and settings:

i. Mesh:

A defined mesh sizing through element division of about 10 elements are given for the body and a tetrahedron mesh for the tool.

ii. Analysis settings:

iii. Velocity:

Case 1 Case 2

iii. Fixed support:

4. Solutions:

i. Total Deformation:

Case 1 Case 2

ii. Equivalent Stress:

Case 1 Case 2

iii. Temperature:

Case 1 Case 2

5. Result:

Total Deformation (mm) Equivalent Stress (MPa) Temperature (°C)
Case 1 34.817 681.11 371.53
Case 2 30.889 639.8 382.69

The Explicit Dynamic simulation is realized on Planar machining. It is observed that the Velocity had a linear Relationship with Deformation And Stress. However, the values aren't accurate as further grid dependency test and other iteration should be performed for concluding on the relation obtained.
