Week 9 - Attachment Feature Creation (Ribs & Screw Boss) - Challenge 1

AIM

Create the rib for the Drill Handle considering the design rules mentioned in the video.

Procedure for creating the switch bezel

  • Creat tooling axis
  • Creat B class surface
  • Creat C class surface
  • creat closed surface
  • creat rib
  • creat screw boss
  • Do draft analysis

Creat tooling axis

1.the tooling axis is created by Normal to surface method

2.The base surface of the class - A was extracted and a point at the centre is created

3.then use line commend to creat tooling axis by normal to surface option in line command

Creat B class surface

1.In the case of Class A the surface below is called core and the surface above is called cavity.

2.Class A is an aesthetics surface and class B is an engineering surface.

3.B surface should be inside the class A surface.

4.To create the class B surface, offset the class A surface inside as per our thickness requirement (2.5mm) .

5.Once the class A surface is offset created, according to the thickness, we can observe some patches on the offset surface due to the fillets on the class A surface. Now, we need to close those patches.

6. I used a multi-section solid command to close the patch to create the proper 'Class B surface

Creat C class surface

1.I used the sweep command in the geometric shape design workbench to create the class C surface.

2.Initially, I extracted the edges of the class A surface with tangent continuity by using the multiple extract command.

3.After extracting the class A surface edges correctly, I sweeped the extracted edges with 93deg toward the class B surface.

4.After sweeping the extracted class A surface edges, I extrapolated the edges of the sweep for 2mm to intersect the sweep edges with each other.

5.Now I trimmed the extrapolated surfaces together to create a complete sweep surface towards the class B surface.

6.I joined both the trimmed sweep surface and class A surface together, to get the class A+C surfaces as a single surface.

7.Now, to create a solid body for the door handle we need a closed surface.

8.I trim the class B surface with joined class A+C surface to make the closed surface of a door handle.

Creat closed surface

1.Check whether all the sides of class B and Class C surfaces are intersecting properly with each other, to get a closed surface by trimming class B and class C surfaces.

2.If the class B and class C sides are not intersected properly, we need to extrapolate the sides of the class B surface which are not intersecting with the class C surface.

3.Now, check class B and class C surface boundaries whether all the sides are intersecting or not with each other.

4.Once the surfaces are intersecting properly trim them together to get a closed surface

Creat RIB

1.To create the ribs on the solid part body, we need to follow the above-mentioned design guidelines.

2.Initially, I create a line sketch for the rib and I extruded it in the tooling axis direction and I thicken the extruded surface to 1mm toward the inside,

3.after thickening the extruded surface I gave 0.5deg of draft angle to the rib, and I union trim the rib with the part body to remove the extra surface of the rib, by union trimming the rib with the part body the rib gets added to the main part body without the unwanted extra part.

4.After adding the rib to the part body, I gave the fillet to the rib with a radius of 0.25mm (as per the design parameters 0.25mm is the maximum fillet radius).

RIB Root Thickness

1.To check the rib root thickness, I created a plane which is perpendicular to the base surface (if the plane is parallel to the base surface the intersection will be taken, but we can't see any rib intersection on it, so that is why the plane is created perpendicular to the base surface).

2.After taking the intersection for the body and plane, we need to create a tri-tangental circle at the bottom of the rib.

3.To create the circle, we need to extract the faces of the intersection (if we directly select the faces without extracting the required faces the input may take the entire intersection surface as an input) which we need to give as input for the tri-tangental circle.

4.The tri-tangental circle is shown below, with the measurement of it.

Creat screw boss

1.To create the screw boss, I created the circular sketch in the sketcher workbench and I padded the sketch to 12.5mm.

2.Now, I drafted the inside and outside surfaces with 0.5deg in the tooling axis direction.

3.After creating the screw boss, I gave 0.25mm of the fillet to all sides.

4.Now, I translated the screw boss toward the right side for 35mm.

5.To keep the screw boss stiff and rigid, I created 4 supporting ribs for each screw boss.

Do Draft analysis

1.First the following the below procedures.

2.By changing the view mode to custom view parameters - Material mode then the feature draft analysis is enabled.

3.Then the compass was activated and placed with the tooling axis by dragging the redpointer and then lockes it

4.Then, by selecting the quick analysis mode, the nominal value will be 3 degrees and checked for the component's draft angle

5.The green colour area shows that it satisfies the 3 degree draft angle

6.the faces which are highlighted in blue , red colour are not cleared properly with 3deg of draft angle

Isometric, Front, Side, and Top View

CONCLUSION:

the Drill Handle considering As per the design rules mentioned in the video the drill handle is created with a engineering features (rib, screw boss)
