Week 9 - Attachment Feature Creation (Ribs & Screw Boss) - Challenge 1

AIM: To Create the rib for the Drill Handle considering the design rules.

Class A surface: Class A surface is a Styling surface or aesthetic surface get it from the styling team. we will design the plastic component by using the Class A surface as input.

Class B-Surface- It is created by offsetting class A.

Class C surface- It is created using sweep command and the joined with A surface. Then finally C and B surfacs are trimed and final product is obtained.

DESIGNING OF THE RIB

RIB is an engineering feature mostly used to provide stiffness and strength in molded parts without increasing the wall thickness

There are many design factors considered to design a RIB:

  • Rib draft angle is to be 0.5 degrees( minimum per side)
  • Rib thickness at the tip is to be greater than the 0.75
  • Rib thickness - 0.4 x t (Thickness)
  • Rib fillet Radius 0.25mm (max)
  • Height of RIb = 5 x t
  • Spacing Rib = 2 x t

  • Draft - 0.5 degrees on the walls of boss
  • Thickness - Typically 40%* of the nominal wall at the base.
  • Height to Diameter Ratio - 3:1
  • Radii - 0.25mm maximum radii.

Draft Analysis is done on the final product.

Catia file and screen shots are provided.
