Week 9 - Attachment Feature Creation - Challenge 1
AIM:
- Creating the rib for the Centre console coin holder considering the design rules.
RIBS:
- Ribs are a feature in plastic injection moulded parts. They are thin extensions that run perpendicular to a wall or plane. They are commonly used to provide additional support and strength to a part.
- These provide economical stiffness and strength in the molded parts with out increasing the overall wall thickness.
- Facilitate locating and arresting of components of an assembly.
- provide alignment in mating parts.
RIB DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS/RULES.
- Thickness
- Height
- Location
- Quantity
- Manufacturability

- Thick ribs often cause sink marks and inturn create cosmetic problems on the opposite surface of the wall to which they are attatched.
- highly glossy, critical surfaces require thinner ribs.
- if the wall thickness is less than 1mm the rib thickness should be equal to the wall thickness.
- very thin ribs can be difficult to fill.
- Measure the base thickness of the rib at the tangent of radius if radii are molded in.
- The larger the area of the base of the rib the more retained heat which results in sink formation.
PROCEDURE:
- Extrude the surface on which you want the ribs.
- create a sketch of the ribs make sure it is iso constrained.

- Extrude the sketch either by extruding the line into the surface by using the pad option in part design.

- Give the thickness comand.

- Give the draft to the ribs along the direction of tooling axis.

- Give fillets and other required operations.
- Add to the main part body.
Final Body:

Different Views:

- Rib root thickness checking and spacing of the ribs.

- Perform the draft analysis on the same component.

Tree Structure:

Conclusion:
- Hence we have finally added ribs to the coin holder and performed draft analysis on it considering the design rules mentioned in the video.
