Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge
Objective:- The main aim of this week challenge is to perform a transient structural analysis of worm gear. In this analysis need to cut the gear by half and then perform the analysis. Then compare the results of the stress, strain and deformation plots with a detailed explanation for the plots.
Procedure:-
Step 1: Open the ansys workbench module and select the transient structural analysis.
Step 2: Right click the geometry tab and select import geometry--> browse-->select the file--> open.
Step 3: Now edit the geometry in spaceclaim by splitting the gear into two component and delete one half of the gear.
Step 4: Now open the geometry in mechanical modeller.

Step 5: Now assign the material for both worm and gear.

Step 6: Now create a contact between the worm and gear.

Step 7: Now create revolute joint for both worm and gear.

Step 8: Now mesh the model.

Step 9: Now change the analysis settings.

Step 10:Now assign the joint load in order to rotate the component.

- Now run the simulation.
- Now include the total deformation, Equivalent stress and strain in output files.
- Now change the model as per the question and run the simulation.
- Compare the result plot and give a detailed explanation.
OUTPUTS:
Force Convergence:-

Equivalent Stress:-

Equivalent Elastic Strain:-

Total Deformation:-

- Here we have applied the rotation to the worm upto 15 or upto 750 deg.
- So, the deformation will not be higher for worm, but higher deformation will take place to the gear, as it is in big size and for one rotation or 750 deg of the gear, number of rotation of the worm will be more, so the large deformation in terms of dispalcement can be seen at gear.
Force Reation:-

Contact pressure:-

Conclusion:-
- From the results we can conclude that the worm and gear assembly should be made out of diffenrent material to minimize the stress and pressure and to reduce the loss of efficiency.
- Generally the worm and worm gear are used with different material to reduce friction and for better transimission.
- Also due to sliding, heat may generate, which reduced the efficiency, so use of dissimilar material is necessary.
- With large number of starts of worm and comparatively large number of teeth of the gear can improve the transimision ratio very high.
- Shape of the worm is slim compared to gear, so higher tooth forces lead to higher deflection of the worm shaft, which can have negative consequences for the wear load capacity as well as the efficiency.
- So for required power density, there should be advancements in bronze material, lubricants and manufacturing quality.
