Challenge

Week 8 - Universal Joint

Aim

a) To perform transient structural analysis of universal joint using ANSYS Workbench

b) To change the spring material as mentioned in the question

c) To compare the three cases in terms of given results

Procedure

1. Imparting the geometry

After opening the ANSYS Workbench, the geometry was imparted and transient structural analysis was selected. Given CAD Geometry was imported in ANSYS and model was edited as given below:

2. Material Data

The three material mentioned in the question have the following properties:

3. Connections

3.1 Fixed Joint

The following given geometry has been assigned as fixed joint which is the end of given spring:

3.2 Body to Ground revolute joints

The two main input and output subparts of this joint has been assigned as body to ground revolute joints. The rotation was about the Z axis:

3.3 Body to Body revolute joints

There are 8 body to body revolute joints that have been assigned to the given CAD as per the given below:

4. Mesh Details

All the settings for mesh were remained as such default. The size used for mesh elemets was 4.0 mm.

5. Analysis Settings

The anslysis was done in 5 steps and the settings for these steps are given below:

Large deflection was on and auto time stepping was remained as off in the simulation. All other settings was remained as program controlled.

6. Load Details

6.1 Joint Rotation

Since the analysis was done in 5 steps and hence the roation was given to joint in 5 steps. Rotaion was given to the input joint.

7. Results

7.1 Case 1 - Structural steel

7.1.1 Equivalent Stress

7.1.2 Total Deformation

7.2 Case 2 - Titanium Alloy

7.2.1 Equivalent Stress

7.2.2 Total Deformation

7.3 Case 3 - Stainless Steel

7.3.1 Equivalent Stress

7.3.2 Total Deformation

Conclusions

a) Simulation was done successfully using ANSYS Workbench.

b) As can be seen from the above, stress is maximum in case of structural steel.

c) Total deformation was same in all the cases.
