Week 8 - Universal Joint
REPORT
DOUBLE UNIVERSAL JOINT WITH A SPRING
OBJECTIVE
To perform transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using 3 different materials.
PROCEDURE
CASE 1
Loaded the model in mechanical GUI.

Rotate the gear part and the motion gets transferred through pin joint and coil the spring.
Deleted all the contacts since we do not require it.
The material using is structural steel and the properties are given below,
JOINTS
Body to ground-Fixed joint is applied to the spring.
Body to ground-Revolute joint is applied to gear shaft.
Body to ground-Revolute joint is applied to spring shaft.
Body to body-Revolute joint is applied to all 8 pin joints.
ANALYSIS SETTING
Total 5 steps and the setting are given below,

The gear is rotated to 150 degrees.
A 4mm mesh is used for this analysis.
RESULTS
THE TOTAL DEFORMATION
THE EQUIVALENT STRESS
CASE 2
Here the material used for the joint for the spring is stainless steel. All other procedures are same as case 1. The properties of the stainless steel is shown below,
The total deformation and equivalent stress is shown below,

CASE 3
Here the material used for the joint for the spring is titanium alloy. All other procedures are same as case 1. The properties of the titanium alloy is given below,

The total deformation and equivalent stress is shown below,

CONCLUSION
Comparing the total deformation (max)
Case 1 = 38.647 mm
Case 2 = 38.637 mm
Case 3 = 38.637 mm
Comparing the equivalent stress (max)
Case 1 = 1473 MPa
Case 2 = 1425 MPa
Case 3 = 721.52 MPa
The total deformation is same for all 3 cases.
The maximum equivalent stress is occurred in case 1 where structural steel as spring joint and least occurred in case 3 where titanium alloy as spring joint.
